A shy, sensitive Jew who grew up in Fascist Italy, the author overcame anti-Semitic repression and her country's relative scientific immaturity, winning the 1986 Nobel Prize in medicine for her work on the nervous system. After Mussolini's racial laws stripped Levi-Montalcini of her academic post, she set up a small, clandestine laboratory in a Piedmont farmhouse where she carried out her fruitful research. Her firsthand account of her country's knuckling under to Hitler is calm and courageous. In 1946, she left Italy for St. Louis, and this earnest, talkative autobiography offers a detailed picture of the growth of modern experimental neurobiology. In 1963, Levi-Montalcini returned to Rome to live with her twin sister and continue her research. Mirroring her scientific credo that imperfection and unpredictability are the yeast of human evolution, her story unfolds a rich, unpredictable life.

An elegantly written recollection by an incredible woman.

This autobiography offers amazing insights not only into the thoughts and feelings of a truly delightful and perceptive woman but also an extrodinarily intimate record of the extreme struggle to survive and retain a sense of balance and optimism during the period of outrageous Nazi dominance across much of Europe.

Written in a delightfully graceful and elegant style that is almost totally absent today, Rita Levi-Montalcini's autobiograpghy takes one through the challenges of growing up in Torino during the period when women were not expected to want anything beyond getting married, raising a family and being the support system for their husbands. Add being a Jew in a primarily non-Jewish environment and one begins to appreciate the enormous hill Ms Levi-Montalcini climbed from her nursery in a warm and supporting household in 1908 to the wonder of being feted by both Swedish and scientific royalty in Stockholm in 1986. Never anything but disarmingly open and humble, the author shares all of her thoughts, feelings, desires, hopes and fears as she overcomes huge challenges and relentlessly pursues Mother Nature, finally getting her to relinquish a few fundamental secrets regarding our central nerve system.

Though a non-biologist, non-doctor, non-physiologist, I was nonetheless able to enjoy (though for sure not comprehend) the scientific details of her accomplishment. Fear not, her writting is sufficiently clear that even the most non-medical among us can fabricate a good mental image of her ground breaking yet simple research in sufficient detail to at least appreciate and enjoy, if not understand, her struggle and ultimate success in identifying the human Nerve Growth Factor.

A wonderful and inspiring autobiography. I remember looking for this book a year ago and it was around $200 -- so happy to find it for $13!

I'd love to get a copy to read this!

Ordered and paid $81.25 for a used copy from AmazonUK in Dec2012 after reading Dr Levi-Montalcini's obituary; she was 101.
I never received it. Let the seller know, they refunded all but $17.

Chalk that up to live and learn- probably pinched on the sending end, given her death and people wanting to read about her causing what few existing books available to skyrocket in prices like you see here.

The prices you see are crazy high. Where is a supply and demand publisher?! GIVE US HIGH QUALITY STORIES OF HUMAN GREATNESS! Kind of like dying of thirst in the desert, intellectually dying to read about this great woman and her colleagues!

The publisher needs to go to a second printing to make this book widely available as it is a story which deserves a large audience!
I finally got a used copy to read, at a bargain price of around $80.
You are right- the price offends, and this brilliant woman's thoughts, insights and her story needs to be available to millions.
That Rita-Levi-Montalcini's story happened DURING World War II, and she was Jewish, and she explains what she and family and friends endured during this time is equally enlightening as a primary history source. Gutwrenching to me, she describes being in Florence as the Nazis bombed the ancient bridges...
Get it, read it is all I can say. The scientific story is impressive as well of course. Some ethical intelligent publisher somewhere should republish this! Maybe Jeff Bezos would be willing to underwrite the publishing?

Colonel Sanders and the KFC Empire

Secret Recipe is a book that offers a good, historical breakdown of the Kentucky Fried Chicken company and the individuals who built the restaurant into the thriving business that it remains today. Darden tries to cover all the important bases, from the original restaurant that opened in Corbin, Kentucky, all the way to the present day business, owned and operating by Tricon, Inc.

I really enjoyed all the facts that this book contains. Until I read this book, I did not know that it was Pete Harman who thought of the name, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and I didn't know that Harman dreamed up the idea of selling buckets of chicken. Like most people, I assumed that the Colonel himself deserved credit for these business discoveries. After reading about the naming of the restaurant, I sure am glad that Harman had the necessary business sense to reject the restaurant name "Utah Chicken". It just doesn't sound right. It makes about as much sense as the "Utah Jazz". This is just oen of many facts discussed in this book.

Throughout the pages of this book, the author includes important quotes that are highlighted in a gray box, set aside from the regular text. There are also a few lists of facts here and there such as "Early Franchise Holders" and "The Colonel's Appearances on Television". You can also find text boxes on many pages titled "Pete's Words of Wisdom", which include quotes from Harman on successful restaurant operation.

One other important note to make about this book is that it was written as a historical summary of the KFC business as a whole. It isn't a biographical sketch of Colonel Sanders. Author Robert Darden does make frequent mention of the Colonel, as he should. But there's just as much coverage given to Pete Harman and other people who were instrumental to the success of this business.

Colonel Sanders has been gone now for more than two decades. Much of his original vision of what a restaurant should be has changed over the years. Even the name of the restaurant has changed from Kentucky Fried Chicken to the abbreviated KFC. But one thing that hasn't gone by the wayside is the image of Colonel Sanders. His familiar, smiling face remains a part of the KFC restaurant chain and is displayed on KFC merchandise and around each KFC store unit. It's a tribute to the man and the legend known as Colonel Harland Sanders. His finger lickin' good original recipe of herbs and spices has satisfied chicken lovers all over the world for more than half a century. And this book is equally satisfying, full of trivia and historical accounts of the KFC company and its rise to the top of its restaurant class.

KCF will always be cookin'

KFC has a great history and its development is a wonderful addition to any study of the fast food industry. I recommend this book in conjunction with Behind the Arches. For those who love the Colonel and want to learn more about the man, the myth, and the legend they can get it all here. The growth of the company and strategy for deployment are all clearly explained. IT is very well written and I enjoyed the anecdotes along the way.

This book provides great insight into the real story behind KFC. Especially entertaining for those that are familiar with KFC, the organization, the franchises, and the restaurant business. Goes into the philosophies of Pete Harman, the first, biggest and most influencial franchisee. Talks alot about the company, the growth, the growing pains, and what made the company successful.

Clearly spells out the meditation techniques!

I found Davidji when I listened to several of Deepak Chopra's meditation challenges. I loved his guided meditation. I have also been interested in Primordial Sound Meditation and wanted to read more about that. So, when I saw that Davidji had written a book on meditation, I knew it would be a good one for me to read.

Davidji, outside of not giving you your PSM mantra has clearly spelled-out the techniques and steps to take to do Primordial Sound Meditation and other mantra-based meditation. If you are looking for what kind of meditation would be a good "fit" for you, there are enough types in the book (also clearly instructed) to be able to find the perfect meditation style for you. If, like me, you can't afford the current rates of TM, this will give you a really good base to start meditating at home. The common questions and answers from Davidji, along with how to get past the common reasons that people avoid meditation, are enough reasons to buy the book. So happy I have it in my collection. I am still going to take a Primordial Sound Meditation class, because I want some personalized instruction, but if you follow the guidance in the book, you can meditate without spending another dime.

I was introduced to meditation 10 years ago by watching Deepak Chopra on Oprah...(ok, pause for slight chuckle for unintentional Chopra/Oprah rhyme). That appearance brought me to Deepak's web site, which brought me to the divine davidji. His personal evolution from corporate type A to spiritual type ahhh is what speaks to me. A regular guy with a great message delivered with ease, yet a passion that makes me want to ride on his carpet any time! Having listened to his lively yet soothing voice on guided meditation cd's, the website and Hay House Radio, I rushed to order this book and read it in two days. It is great for beginners to weed out the confusion of how to start meditating and any of the rest of us who have been on the search for quite some time. Has a prominent place on my book shelf and my recommended reading list for any meditation seeker!

A book you'll keep in your office from now on!

Seriously good read. This book is based on extensive research. They followed over 25,000 people over 2 decades in multiple industries to come up with the best practices based on both the good and the bad. It gets 5 stars for a few reasons. First, it's not dry in the least. Patterson, Grenny, McMillan, and Switzler have compiled their methodology in an enlightening and often amusing way. I found myself laughing at their occasionally sarcastic undertones. However, the message was not sarcastic. Second, this book challenges you to find that space between cause and effect and fill it with as much information as possible, while getting yourself in control. The CPR method of content, pattern, and relationship really helps to pull the details of the confrontation into focus. It helps you deliver an effective message to the individual in your crucial confrontation which highlights the "real" issue and seeks a meaningful and effective end to it all. They challenge you to work on yourself first by mastering your story. In short, they tell you that before you go on a rampage and mow down the assailant, you must recognize that there is more to the story. For example, in order to understand the entirety of the situation, one of the many things you must do is to create a safe environment where the individual can open up and explain the rest of the story. This book goes beyond simplistic ideas of how to handle crucial confrontations. It breaks down what you need to do, gives you multiple examples, and emphasizes follow-up. Without follow-up, history is doomed to repeat itself regardless of circumstance. They incorporate the need for motivation, making it easy for the individual in question, staying focused and flexible due to emergent issues, etc. For some, this is common sense. If that is you, we need more people like you. For the majority of us, this is news! The message of this book is only useful if you can follow their advice and move forward with a cool head.
Don't read any reviews with negative commentary. This book is necessary for everyone in leadership and management. It is necessary for anyone who deals with other human beings. In short, it takes what confrontation skills you've assimilated over the course of your life and sharpens and adds to them.

Essential for the library of all Managers/Leaders

This is a book that should be on every (project) managers bookshelf. I give this book away as a participation reward in my management training seminars. The book will help just about anyone develop good strategies for having those confrontational discussions that are absolutely necessary to be an successful manager/leader. This book, and it's companion, "Crucial Conversations" are worth multiple readings.

When Life Goes Off-Script

"Crucial Confrontations" is an important book because we must communicate. We are social beings who share space, time, and the journey of this life.

Nothing is more disheartening than when someone breaks a promise, violates an expectation, or just behaves badly towards you. How do you respond? Some people, perhaps too many, just let it slide. Then, what was promised becomes conveniently lost in translation. The expectation becomes a disappointment. The bad behavior reinforced.

Perhaps this cycle explains the lack of accountability in American society today. Confronting someone can be hard but if you do not, problems often persist and get worse. Why? Clementine Paddleford is quoted as having said, "Never grow a wishbone... where your backbone ought to be."

Interpersonal communications is skills-based. No one is so good at it that they succeed the first time, every time. This axiom remains true whether you are at home, in the boss's office, or in the Oval Office. No one always gets everything.

Perhaps it is because human beings are not omniscient that self-respect is a good premise to start with. No one wants the reputation of being a wall-flower or a door mat. Believing in your own self-worth, knowing that your perception of the world matters is as valid a reason as any for engaging in a confrontation that sets your world aright.

"Crucial Confrontations" is about accountability. The approach is candid and courteous; it unfolds in an environment of safety, and, by honoring the reality of consequences, the interpersonal skills this book teaches help the reader "bring predictability to a turbulent world."

The authors acknowledge there's nothing particularly groundbreaking in this book. We employ these communications tools when we are at our best and there are times when walking away is appropriate. "Crucial Confrontations" reminds us how to communicate better when life goes off script.

Communicating can be difficult, but we do it all the time. Having a crucial confrontation may not guarantee success, but it will help you stand tall and move forward on your shared journey of this life.

The book is a microhistory that does much more than simply depict an event in the past; it uses the power of illustration to convey important themes in world history and to reveal the processes by which history is made.

The story of Abina Mansah--a woman "without history" who was wrongfully enslaved, escaped to British-controlled territory, and then took her former master to court--takes place in the complex world of the Gold Coast at the onset of late nineteenth-century colonialism. Slavery becomes a contested ground, as cultural practices collide with an emerging wage economy and British officials turn a blind eye to the presence of underpaid domestic workers in the households of African merchants. The main scenes of the story take place in the courtroom, where Abina strives to convince a series of "important men"--a British judge, two Euro-African attorneys, and a jury of local leaders--that her experiences and perceptions matter. "Am I free?" Abina inquires. Throughout both the court case and the flashbacks that dramatically depict her life in servitude, both the defendants and members of the court strive to "silence" Abina and to impose their own understandings and meanings upon her.

Following the graphic history in Part I, Parts II-V provide detailed historical context for the story, a reading guide that reconstructs and deconstructs the methods used to interpret the story, and strategies for using Abina in various classroom settings.

This second edition features a new gender-rich section, Part V: Engaging Abina, which explores Abina's life and narrative as a woman. Focusing on such important themes as the relationship between slavery and gender in pre-colonial Akan society, the role of marriage in Abina's experience, colonial paternalism, and the meaning of cloth and beads in her story, this section also includes a debate on whether or not Abina was a slave, with contributions by three award-winning scholars--Antoinette Burton, Sandra Greene, and Kwasi Konadu--each working from different perspectives. The second edition includes new, additional testimony that was rediscovered in the National Archives of Ghana, which is also reflected in the graphic history section.

Great book on West Africa, Slavery, and Colonialism

Abina is an incredible book and a wonderful resource for teachers/students on issues such as colonialism, slavery, justice, and gender. As a social studies teacher I have used it in my 9th-10th grade classroom and students love it and learn so much. The combination of graphics, text, and the thoughtful historical discussion at the end makes for a really unique and valuable source.
