It is a vivid account of the delights and hardships and the excitements and the dangers, experienced by the family both before and after the shipwreck. The author has drawn upon a wealth of other sources, including his own memories of a life-changing experience, to bring us this true story of adventure ? ultimately a very human and humbling tale.

The author has taken his father's classic book, Survive the Savage Sea, about their family's survival when their boat was sunk by killer whales during a Pacific crossing, and added his own account. Thirty-two years ago, British sailor Dougal Robertson published a first-hand account of his family's experience on a sailing voyage around the world. This was not however, a recounting of exotic ports and challenging passages. Rather, it described the horror of shipwreck and how six people in one tiny dinghy survived the perils of the open ocean for 38 days. Robertson's Survive the Savage Sea became a classic and ultimately Hollywood brought the story to the silver screen in 1992 with Robert Ulrich and Ali McGraw playing Robertson and his wife, Lyn. Still, Robertson believed there was more to share. Before his death in 1991, he asked his eldest son, Douglas, to make sure the family's saga would be told in its entirety. Enter Douglas Robertson's book. The Last Voyage of the Lucette. Incorporating most of his father's original text, Robertson expands the story scope. Drawing from newspaper articles, discussions with family members, Dougal's notes and his own recollections, he breathes life into every aspect of the Robertson clan journey physically or emotionally from their start in Falmouth England, to their eventual rescue by the Japanese ship Toka Maru roughly 300 miles west of Costa Rica. After struggling with farming for years, Dougal saw an around-the-world voyage as an unparalleled opportunity to educate his four children Douglas, Anne and twins Neil and Sandy and to make up for, as he put it, all those cold nights and empty dinner tables, the holidays they never had and the days when we sent them to school in shoes that didn't fit. The Robertson's planned their trip for two years. A 50-year old, 43- foot schooner named LUCETTE became the new family home, and they finally cast off the docklines on January 27, 1971. Part One is an exciting foray into the world of liveaboard cruising as the family sails across the Atlantic to the Windward Islands and the Bahamas, where teenage daughter Anne falls in love and decides not to continue the trip. The pages turn so quickly, it's effortless to follow along as this colorful family sails onward to Jamaica, the Panama Canal where they take on Welsh traveler Robin to fill Anne's empty place and the Galapagos. It all comes to a shocking abrupt halt in the morning hours of June 15, 1972, when Lucette is attacked by a pod of orcas. While all six ultimately reached the life raft safely, they are faced with a daunting situation. They are alone on the Pacific Ocean, five weeks from anyone knowing they are missing, well beyond the shipping lanes and they don't have nearly enough food or water. Part two is a day-by-day account of the shipwrecked family's time at sea. The Robertson's story is remarkable in that the group of six had to abandon their deflating life raft and survive aboard the tiny dinghy Ednamair during their 38-day odyssey. 'It is essentially Dougal's story,' his son notes. 'For his superhuman efforts in getting us all home in one piece, and for giving us those two short years aboard Lucette, I shall thank him every day of my life.' (Sailing)

About the Author
Douglas Robertson, eldest son of Linda and Dougal Robertson born 1954 and raised as a farmer's son before sailing with the family on the Lucette when he was 16. He went into the British Merchant Navy as a cadet, finally serving as Chief Officer. He left the sea in 1980 for a career in accountancy and lives with his family in London where he is also a qualified Tai Chi instructor.

Worth your time

This book is worth reading 5 times, because each time you will find something you missed the time before. If you think about your daily life, what irritates and frustrates you, what scares you, what worries you, and contrast it with what this family endured, your troubles will fade away. More importantly you will be inspired by the depths of human courage and tenacity. You will be amazed by the strength of the human body and mind. And for my fellow psychology buffs, you will be intrigued by the survival mentality that persevered and kept these people alive in these conditions.

Great book. A little dry, stranded day after day after day after day in a life raft. But very memorable, and highly recommended to anyone who enjoyed books about blue water sailing.

Surviving the impossible

6 people with a leaky life raft and small dingy for 38 days surfing on their wits. Puts life in a different perspective and makes our own complaints about difficulties pale in comparison.
Just goes to show that you can make your own luck through sheer perserverance.
Would also recommend Survive the Savage Sea by Dougal Robertson.

I cannot say enough great things about this book

I cannot say enough great things about this book, but I'll try! Before jumping from Wedding Planner to Sales Director, I was scared beyond belief. I've never sold anything in my life nor had a career doing it. My boss gave me this book and said "Read this". I couldn't put it down! Chapter after chapter was drawing me in to more Ah-Ha moments with each flip of the page. Thank you, Alan, for representing the Wedding World and Sales so well in this book. I've been in the wedding industry for 12 years and 7 months of those have been sales. At first, I was so anti sales, then after reading his book. it gave me light, meaning and empowerment to sell more weddings and events! All we have to do is Shut Up!

My son loves The Hardy Boys

I have had a difficult time encouraging my 11 year old son to read independently in his free time. Since purchasing two Hardy Boys books, he has not been able to put them down. Both books were hardback and look beautiful. I will keep them in our library for our other sons too.

i am a fan of the hardy boys and i love all of there bokks but this one was fully loaded with action packed surprises even i was surprised at how creative thinking franklin did i believe this is one of his most surpriseing books yet so i really reccomed this book to all!! :) =)

Frank, Joe and Chet head to Los Angeles to track down a ring of car thieves and to find a rare, valuable coin stolen from Chet's cousin, Vern. I would rate the book average to good; although, it proved to be much better than I had thought it would be.

From working class tenements to the pages of Punch to the very Houses of Parliament, the Victorian Anglo-Catholic movement provoked bitter debate and even violence throughout Victorian times. Rotten vegetables were thrown at priests as they spoke from their pulpits, and fistfights broke out among families over whether dear departed ones would be buried "High Church" or "Low Church." In this innovative critical study, John Shelton Reed provides the first comprehensive treatment of the rise, growth, and eventual consolidation of this controversial movement within the Victorian Church of England.

Reed identifies Anglo-Catholicism as a countercultural movement, in some ways not unlike the counterculture of the 1960s, one that championed practices that were symbolic affronts to some of the central values of the dominant middle-class culture of its time. He identifies certain members of the clergy (including John Henry Newman and his circle), the urban poor, women, and youth of both sexes, expecially those who were put off by "muscular Christianity," as those most attracted both to what the movement had to offer and to the shock value it gave to the institutions, classes, and individuals whom they despised. Each of these component groups can be seen as culturally subordinate or in decline--threatened, oppressed, or at least bored by the Victorian values that the movement challenged--and thus ready to hear subversive messages.

A distinguished sociologist, best known as a major interpreter of the American South, Reed here explores new ground with characteristic scholarly acumen, thorough and meticulous research, fresh perspective and insight, and a remarkably engaging literary style. He has uncovered and taken full advantage of a wealth of largely untapped archival material, from the library of Pusey House, Oxford, as well as the Bodleian Library and the British Library, and has fashioned this into a cogent analysis that will enhance understanding of the subject for both scholars and general readers. His conclusions will shed light on many aspects of Victorian studies and the related disciplines of history (social, cultural, political, intellectual, and ecclesiastical), literary studies, women's studies, and the study of social movements. John Henry Newman, John Keble and E.B. Pusey spearheaded the Oxford Tractarians' movement that brought on the Church of England's bloodless civil war in the latter two-thirds of the 19th century. The campaign of this new Anglo-Catholic faction of the High Church proposed to bring the Church of England back to its roots. The Low and evangelical factions saw the movement not as a renaissance but as a reversion to dreaded Roman Catholicism. Though scholarly and professorially deadpan, Reed, a sociologist at the University of North Carolina and author of several books on the American South, has an attractive affection for his subject: particularly its famous and famously oddball figures, polemical language and political irony. He suggests that the movement developed like other ideological revolutions and shows how it settled, ironically enough, within a few generations, from its radical origins into place as part of the Establishment. That is, as Reed sums up, "Anglo-Catholicism had become increasingly conventional, almost respectable. By the 1890s most Anglo-Catholics plainly regarded this fact as a triumph. But it could also have been seen as the ultimate indignity." The real hero of the story, though Reed doesn't directly say so, is Victorian society, which, for all its rigidity, conservatism, sexism and blustering self-righteousness, was, finally, like its greatest novelist, Anthony Trollope, wonderfully and unexpectedly tolerant, progressive and accommodating. About the Author
The noted scholar and essayist John Shelton Reed is William Rand Kenan Jr. Professor of Sociology and Director of the Institute for Research in Social Science at the University of North Carolina. His numerous books include One South: An Ethnic Approach to Regional Culture; Southern Folk, Plain and Fancy; and Whistling Dixie: Dispatches from the South. He also serves as editor of the journal Southern Cultures. He attends the Chapel of the Cross (Episcopal), in Chapel Hill.

Humor with a bedrock of Grace

Reed writes with humor and wit, leading the reader through a romp of churchy controversies from Anglicanism's most flamboyant period. But under this humor is a bedrock of deep theological insight, spirituality, and that elusive Christian concept called "Grace." You won't be disappointed with this book. A must read for anyone contemplating anglo-catholicism (dare I say "second wave Anglo-Catholicism?).

Entertaing, informative--altogether marvelous

High church? Evangelical? Broad church? As a relatively recent (4 years) member of the Reformed Episcopal Church, these terms have been a matter of both great interest and great confusion to me. Reed's book is a terrific history of the Anglo-Catholic movement in England, but touches many other bases along the way. His prose is lucid, his style humerous. This book was difficult to put down except during periods of helpless laughter. It should be of use to any Anglican wishing to become better informed about the history and development of our "via media."

The foundations of 100 years of physics

Gibbs was one of the few great American mathematical physicists. In this book you will find a complete treatment of dyadic operators that is noticeably absent from most books that came after it.
It was Gibbs himself, along with Oliver Heaviside that turned away from Hamilton's quarternion algebra and decided to invent the vector calculus that every physics student since then has learned and used in their careers. I believe that if they did not do this, then physics would have only been accessible to very few of the most brilliant, because almost no one was ready for quarternions or Clifford Algebra that we now see used today. Vector Calculus was the "midwife" of mathematical physics and analytical geometry, and because of its physically intuitive quality, it enabled "the rest of us" to learn this, the finest of the sciences.
I heartily recommend this book and urge its complete study.
