Clash Within civilizations is an important book to read for those seeking to better understandhow non-Western civilizations are dealing with modernity. IT deals with things such as how traditional Chinese Philosophy in influening China today and how religions like Buddhism and Hinduism are trying to cope with the moderin world. The book also contians a chapter called 'the quest for innovation: Islam and the Challenges of plurism' which is a good resource to better understand the changes in Islamic countries an important thing considering Islam is and perceived to be on the world stage

Could Not Put It Down

Gerri Hill time after time creates fresh powerful thrilling stories intertwined with heart-pounding romances and Hunter's Way is no exception.

Tori Hunter is an arrogant, abrasive Homicide detective who alienates every partner she has ever had. In the middle of a series of murders, Samantha Kennedy transfers from the Assault division and is paired with Tori after she blows through another partner. Even though Tori is considered a nightmarish partner, Samantha stands up to her. While Samantha challenges her attitude, she respects Tori's strong instincts as an effective detective. This bodes well for their relationship as they pursue a serial killer who may be targeting the gay and lesbian community. As their professional partnership develops, their strong attraction for one another is undeniable. Their only obstacles are Sam's boyfriend and Tori' very tragic past.

Hill is a master at building her characters' professional and personal relationships slowly, effectively absorbing them into the main storyline. We get to know Sam and Tori well as the plot progresses. We understand Tori's total immersion into her career as her horrific past unfolds. We see Sam struggle with her lack of passion for her boyfriend while she is discovering new and powerful feelings for her partner that cross the line of professionalism. Tori`s and Sam's characters grow as their partnership intensifies. They learn to trust each other as they encounter dangerous situations, and this aspect of the partnership is very different for Tori. For the first time in Tori's career she has a real partner, and for the first time in her life, she has a friend who cares about her. Tori also wrestles with inappropriate feelings, especially because she believes Sam is straight. But as the violence in their daily lives continues, they are forced to face their attraction to one another.

Hill weaves a romance that leaves this reader breathless while crafting a police procedural that is thorough and easy to follow. The stages of tracking down a serial killer are interspersed in the story, moving it along smoothly. The dialogue throughout is on fire with passion. The tenderness in the story embraces the reader and is overpowering. Hill's pacing is even with no abrupt starts or endings. Even though we learn the killer's identity two thirds of the way through the story, the ending is a surprise. There is more to Hunter's Way than we suspect.

Amazingly this is an uber-Xena

I never thought I'd be able to read one and enjoy it, but I did. It didn't dawn on me until well into the book that one character was "tall and dark-haired" and the other was "shorter and blond". It's a well-written if pedestrian mystery. Anyone who reads mysteries on a regular basis will figure out "who dunnit" fairly quickly, but the interactions of the characters are fun to read.

This is a great example of how an uber-Xena should be.

I'll definitely be putting Ms. Hill on my watch list.

Meet the "Bad" Girl on the "Good" Side of the Law

When I first picked up this book and realized the main character is named "Tori Hunter," I was a little concerned. You see, I live in Minnesota and one of my favorite players on the Minnesota Twins baseball team is outfielder Torii Hunter. Let me put your fears to rest... Tori in the book is NOTHING like Torii on the field... She's much, much more intriguing.

Tori is a homicide detective who has had six male partners in as many years. Her partners either threaten to quit or they are injured on the job, so she gets assigned to someone else. Known as cold and heartless, many of her peers shun the idea of being assigned as her partner.

In walks Samantha Kennedy. Samantha has recently been reassigned to Homicide per her request and is Tori's new partner. Samantha's boyfriend doesn't support this career choice because he envisions their marriage, children and grandchildren. (Note: Her boyfriend is more of a frightening comic relief than a part of the real story. He seems almost seemed like an afterthought on the author's part. Hill builds the tension between Sam and her boyfriend, almost turning it violent when she tells him it's over. However, even that tension doesn't play a pivotal part in the story.)

As Sam begins to break down Tori's rigid exterior, she begins to have feelings for a woman for the first time in her life. Confused, but intrigued, she doesn't resist. Tori can't deny the growing magnetism she feels for Sam and struggles with allowing the other woman in.

Hill is undeniably one of my favorite authors. Her characters seem to spring to life. Admittedly, they are a little "more" than real, but that's what makes her books so fantastic. `Hunter's Way' is a welcome addition to my personal, permanent collection. Highly recommended.

After a brief foray into futuristic science fiction (Sandman, Sleep, 1993), Lieberman returns to his forte of mordant, contemporary crime chillers (Shadow Dancers, etc.), this one set in the world of high art. To commemorate the 550th birthday of Botticelli, Mark Manship, curator of Renaissance painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is assembling a major retrospective that could catapult him into the position of museum director. In Europe to track down three drawings for the show, Manship meets the eponymous Isobel Cattaneo, a direct descendant of Botticelli's famed model and mistress, Simonetta. Meanwhile, in a parallel plot line, a neo-fascist Italian count, Ludovico Borghini, determined to preserve his country's heritage, is planning to prevent the transfer of the drawings, which he has stolen, to the States. When Borghini suspects Isobel of interfering with his plans, he kidnaps her, leading to the sort of grim and tense scenario that Lieberman does so well, and to a violent conclusion back in the States. Lieberman writes an elegant sentence, as always, and his art-world detailing, especially of maneuverings and backstabbings, seems splendidly on target. He miscalculates, though, in casting Borghini not just as a rabid patriot but as a serial killer; this count's passion is to create life-size dioramas based on Botticelli paintings, using human victims as models in the tableaus. It's a turn that stretches credibility, although it does lend the narrative Lieberman's characteristic dark hues, which readers will find in abundance in this literate, acidic thriller.

Mark Manship, curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is scouring the world collecting the most famous works of Botticelli to mount an exhibition that will represent five years of hard work. In addition, he is hoping to snare Isobel Cattaneo, a direct descendant of the Master's favorite model. The beautiful and independent Isobel is distinctly unreceptive to the idea but, feeling guilty for her shoddy treatment of Mark, she passes on to him the name of an acquaintance who may know the whereabouts of three long-missing Botticelli sketches. In doing so, she unleashes the forces of Ludovico Borghini, last of a noble Italian family, who has descended into extreme right-wing beliefs fed by a mind twisted from childhood experiences. Lieberman (Shadow Dancers, Little, Brown, 1989) delivers a fast-paced thriller replete with insider art talk that keeps the pages turning. Alternate chapters take place from Borghini's sociopathic perspective. Grisly stuff, this is recommended?but not for the squeamish.?Terrill Persky, Woodridge P. L., Ill.

Lots of fun! Too bad the exhibition is fictional!

I happened upon this book and, being an art history major, was intrigued by the title. I enjoyed the book very much, especially because I live in NYC, and am a constant visitor to the MMA. While the scholarship might be a bit tighter, one need not really know that much about SANDRO BOTTICELLI (ahem to "Thriller's Editor" above) to find the book a worthwhile read. The story is more for enjoyment than a guide to how to steal art and should be approached as such. If you are heading out to Central Park for the afternoon, be sure to bring The Girl with the Botticelli Eyes along with your blanket and bottled water! Set up by the museum and you can be certain of a fun afternoon in the shadow of the setting of our hero's trails and tribulations!

Upper East Side meets low life slasher, sustains wounds.

Whatever happened to the Italian fascists? Did they all end up like Mussolini, hanging ignominiously from lampposts? Not exactly. If this thriller by Herbert Lieberman is any guide, they went underground and kept on doing what they do best: bullying the weak, resenting the strong, and indulging their passion for ghoulish ritual.
Their champion of the day is a wealthy dilettante named Ludovico Borghini ('Ludo' to his friends, 'Maestro' to his toadies), who is determined to save Italy's rich cultural heritage from foreigners, even if it means destroying it. Last in the line of a powerful old Roman family, Borghini is almost immune to the law as he kills and maims and carries out his program for the reinvigoration of Italy.
Borghini's shadowy presence makes a formidable opponent to Mark Manship, curator of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, who is out to assemble the pieces of a comprehensive show of the work of Sandro Botticelli. Since this entails taking any number of pictures out of Italy to New York, Manship becomes Public Enemy Number One in the eyes of Borghini. All Italians who come into contact with the American curator are seriously imperiled, especially a beautiful young woman said to be a direct descendant of one of Botticelli's models. Manship finds himself falling in love with her even as he has unknowingly put her in harm's way. By the time Borghini runs his tentacles out for her, Manship is back in New York struggling against a more quotidian villain, the pompous windbag chairman of the museum's board of directors. The woman, Isobel Cattaneo, is on her own as she faces a truly horrific fate in the Villa Borghini at the hands of its demented lord.
It's all very gripping and realistic, with the possible exception of Harbor Rest, the place where Borghini stays when he comes to New York, an '1840s farmhouse with wraparound porch...wedged in between a sooty row of warehouse and derelict tenement buildings'. It's been a long time since there were any farmhouses in the shadow of the World Trade Center. But this is a minor detail. Overall, the settings and characters are true to life.

Torrid Suspense with the Best Flair of Culture Yet

Disclaimer: Don't read this unless you want to know some of the details of the plot. When I picked up this book for a mother's day present in 1998, I had no idea what I had stumbled upon. Sure, the idea of mystery and art has been around for ages, but this one is a little different. This is the best researched work of contemporary modern suspense fiction that I have ever read. Herbert Lieberman has taken fascism (both in Mussolini and Hitler-esq aspects), visual artwork from the Quattrocento Italian time period, relationships between contemporary artists (in this case curators and actors), and the most twisted and disturbing aspects of murder and treachery since the body suit that Jame Gumb makes for himself in "Silence of the Lambs", and puts it all together in a way that will keep you reading until it is finished--and only wanting more in the process. Ludovico Borghini and his apprentice Beppe Falco are two of the seediest, dodgiest characters that I have ever read about in fiction. These are not just corrupt radicals, or your every day serial killers... they take their art seriously (meaning the art of Italians, not their own personal works.) I personally was mortified and appauled by the "tanning process" which takes pages upon pages to read through. I won't explain anymore about that, because one truly needs to read it for ones self. However, one aspect that I personally found quite appealing was the historical background of Borghini: we learn of his family's importance and how he viewed the murder of his mother committed by his father: Of course the kid is going to be messed up--who wouldn't slash priceless works of art (or do something equally disturbing) if that were the case.
Isobel Catteneo is another truly interesting character. She is a quintessential European.. and one can tell that no American would ever act like this descendent of the Simonetta. However, I believe that many Italians are quite like Isobel, making Lieberman's character completely unbelievable to many, but truly original to people that have met someone that is hiding from their family's past. Isobel Catteneo is one character that I doubt that I will ever forget. The same could be said for Beppe and Ludovico.
The plot takes one through Italy-to the joys of the Uffizi, Istanbul, Germany, and all over New York. I agree with the other reviewer that states the Harbor Rest is not quite believable, but it is hardly a major point in the plot. The plot in and of itself is unpredictable in ways that keep a reader on his/her toes, continually seeking what is going to come next. I must admit, the Manship scenes were a bear to get through because I kept wanting to find out more about Borghini and Cattaneo.
Well done Mr. Lieberman. I hope that you are in good health and continue to write more suspense fiction for the ones in your public that really do crave art and knowledge of culture. I, for one, would have gone to the Botticelli exhibit to view the masterpieces, not to impress high up friends. Hopefully there are more of us out there, and if so... they should all read this book.

This is a great book. I highly recommend it to anyone involved with light frame construction. It is clear, concise, the examples are very easy to follow. You do not need to be an engineer to use this book. This is a great book for engineers, architects and contractors alike.

Great Boook for Everyone - Not Just for Students

One of the problems with America's educational system is that most students are given information but never really taught how to learn effectively. As a college teacher, Toni Krasnic (with help from his students) is helping people learn this skill.

He is big on visual maps (sometimes known as mind maps), which has been shown to be effective at engaging both sides of the brain. As a visual learner, I appreciate this approach.

His Concise Learn Method consists of 5 phases - preview, participate, process, practice and produce. This is aimed at breaking the learning down into easily manageable steps. There are 4 steps to each phase - identify the key concepts, connect them with a visual map, think critically and ask key questions. It really makes learning a process of understanding rather than memorizing and regurgitating.

While the book seems clearly targeted at his audience of college students, this should be given to all high school freshmen to prepare them for learning. The book is laid out much like the CLM process. It is visually stimulating, with fun cartoons, diagrams and visual maps, all of which have a purpose.

There are a lot of books on learning available, but most of them are like text books. This book is actually fun to read. I would recommend this book to everyone because we are all life long learners.

Effective learning strategy, incorporating mind maps

If you are looking for a book that has a bunch of colorful mind-maps or that looks at mind-maps from different angles, this is NOT it.

The main focus of this book is on helping you to learn effectively through what the author calls, Concise Learning Method. The method incorporates the use of mind maps, sometimes called visual maps.

The author points out that highly successful students apply an information filter early in the learning process because they know they can't possibly absorb all of the information presented, nor do they have to. They select what is important to learn. They make a conscious decision to absorb only the key concepts, which in turn enables them to learn the course material better and faster and to be able to apply it to other areas of learning as well.

The method consists of 5 phases of learning (preview, participate, process, practice, and produce) and four steps within each phase (identify key concepts, meaningfully organize and connect key concept using visual maps, think critically, and ask key questions).

With Concise Learning Method, learning is achieved via a five-phase process (looking for puzzle pieces) that involves meaningfully organizing and connecting key concepts in a visual map (putting together the puzzle pieces), critically thinking, and asking key questions.

The 4 steps within each phase of Concise Learning Method form a continuous cycle during which you identify key concepts in the raw and unstructured information presented to you. You then organize the information, which in turn improves your understanding and gives you the ability to think critically about the information you have and the information that you need (key questions) to complete your understanding of the material.

The author shares 10 steps used in drawing a mind map:
1. Select the concept, topic, or subject to map
2. Gather all the relevant information
3. Keep the map simple, concise, relevant, accurate, complete, logical and clear
4. Start in the center with the central concept
5. Add primary concepts on the branches connected to the central concept
6. Branch subconcepts off the primary concepts to elaborate and clarify
7. Continue to capture and map key concepts, reorganize, and edit as needed.
8. Add more information - provided it adds value - to the key concepts you've already mapped
9. Add visual elements and formatting to increase the map's effectiveness
10. Go through the visual map checklist for any final edits

The author also shares ideas for ordering your primary concepts and subconcepts:
- WS: who/what, how much, where, when, how, and why
- Classification: Arrangements or relationships
- Definitions: Meanings of things
- Divisions: Chapters or lessons or themes
- Evaluation: Benefits
- Function: What things do
- History: Chronological sequence of events
- Process: How things work
- Properties: Characteristics
- Roles: Roles of relationships of characters
- Structure: How things are formed

This book does contain a lot of visual maps, created with Mindjet Mind Manager, and the author mentions other popular mind mapping programs like iMindMap, MindMapper, and NovaMind. He also states that of course, you can draw your maps by hand, but that using a computer program may be easier, and also mentions some of the free mind mapping programs you can find like XMind, FreMind, Mind42 and IHMC CmapTools.

A great tool for the transitioning student

I first ran across visual mapping under another heading way back in the 70's. I thought it was a useful tool and have used it ever since in taking notes and brain storming sessions. In preparing my daughter for her transition from high school to college, we explored a number of "how to learn" books and courses. Most used a system similar to the one outlined in the Concise Learning Method of previewing, participating, processing, practicing and producing information (with different labels for each phase.) What's unique about CLM is how it integrates known tools and learning strategies in a comprehensive book, filled with great examples, a case study and where to go for additional information. Students unfamiliar with "learning strategies" (almost never taught in HS) will find a clear road map. Students who have developed some strategies (underlining, taking notes, trying to memorize vast amounts of information) will find this book a wonderful resource in helping to refine their strategies and make them more efficient. The big hurdle is making the commitment to learning new skills. It's the rare person who can read a book and make a change in their life without some personal contact and feedback. Teachers, this is a great tool. Students, get a buddy to learn with you.
