Mussolini is remembered as one of the two most important Fascist dictators of the twentieth century. He seized power in Italy in 1922 and ruled the country until overthrown in 1943. Good bio

This is mainly a political economic look at Fascist Italy. It isn't much of a bio of Mussolini because he was a workaholic who didn't lead much of an interesting life away from work. He went to bed late, rose early, and lived his life around work. That's why all Mussolini bios are basically bios of Fascist Italy. A lot of these world leaders weren't interesting people away from their jobs. So if you expect mainly a bio, you're in for a disappointment. However, Mussolini did have interesting quirks (he didn't even wait to get his mistresses into bed; he had sex with them on the stairs and then dismissed them so he could go to bed alone) and opinions (he believed Italy wasn't destined to be a world leader no matter how hard the Italians tried).

Still, this is a good book for political scientists, economists, and historians. I gave it four stars because it wasn't objective in any way. It was extremely subjective. Yet it has new detail other historical books on Fascist Italy don't. Its not good for the casual reader. It's good for someone interested in Fascist Italy and is willing to analyze in order to understand it.

Great re-evaluation of a major campaign

This book is a history of the British Bomber Command. The horror of world war one led the British to build a strategic air force as a means of avoiding the sorts of casualties faced in that war. It was hoped that by using air craft Germany could be made to surrender.
This book is an examination of the failure of that strategic concept. In the first days of the war the British tried a daylight raid on Bremen naval yards. It was generally thought that bombers could get through in daylight due to their speed and defensive armament. This turned out to be a false assumption and a large number of the British Bombers were shot down. Further raids confirmed the vulnerability of unescorted bombers and from that time on it was decided that British Bombers would fly only at night.
For some months bombers flew out at night and tried to bomb various military and industrial targets. The bombing was so inaccurate generally hitting farmland and forests that the Germans were not able to even work out what the intended targets were. The British carried out evaluations and found that only a small percentage of bombs were falling within miles of the targets.
As a result a change in strategy was adopted and that was to bomb the German civilian population. The reason for that was that cities by comparison were easy to find and the use of incendiaries could lead to destructive fires which could destroy housing stock.
The only problem with the strategy was that it resulted in the deaths mainly of the elderly women and children. The structure of German cities was such that the burning and bombing of cities only had a marginal effect on industrial production. (The situation was different in Japan where industry was dotted throughout cities and the fire bombing led to the collapse of industrial production in that country)
The German night fighter effort was reasonably successful against the British Bombers so that the casualty rates of British air crews was very high. The book argues that in general terms the campaign was a poor use of resources and had limited effects until near the end of the war. By late 1944 the German air force was practically destroyed and allied bombers by that time had such a preponderance that they were able to destroy the transport network and to destroy production.
The book is well written easy to read and a fascinating look at a topic that has been dominated by myth makers not truth seekers.

Excellent,factual & detailed narrative of RAF bombing

I read this on the advice of a friend after a tour of northern Germany during which I wondered why so many of the beautiful churches had been levelled in WWII. This book gives a detailed narrative of the strategy and tactics, as well as the horror on the ground and in the air of this controversial air campaign. Interesting and thought-provoking to read. Written by an Englishman.

THE AREA BOMBING OF GERMANY; ALMOST 600000 DEAD

This is an excellent book that objectively traces the history and rationale for the area Bombing campaign against Germany that would lead to the deaths of 52000 aircrew and more than half a million civilians.
The book also relates the revulsion and guilt felt by many aircrew when confronted, after the war, with the results of their bombing missions.
Ironically these same aircrew still idolise their Operational commander - Bomber Harris, who never set foot on an operational squadron during the War.
Arguments are also related about the disagreements that Bomber Harris had with his American colleagues who wanted the Area Bombing campaign transferred to destroying synthetic oil plants and ball bearing factories. Harris wanted to continue bombing cities even when there was not much left to bomb.
When first published this book was severely criticised in England, for daring to suggest that the effort put into Area Bombing could have been better spent elswhere.
This is a thoroughly readable and thought provoking book.

A good writing aid for kindergarden through second graders

I was very surprised to see that Amazon had listed this resource book as being appropriate for baby-preschoolers. What this book actually is is a SPELLING DICTIONARY (NOT a picture book, and there is no story!) designed for k-2nd graders to use to aid their writing. It is a tool that I have found enormously useful to my First graders, who quickly learn that rather than raise their hand to ask how to spell simple words like was, they can look them up themselves. This practice aids in alphabetization skills, and aquaints young students with the use of a dictionary in an easier-to-use format. When the student finds the correct page, they must then use phonetic sounding skills to help narrow the search to which word might be the one they are looking for. Spelling dictionaries give students an autonomous feeling that they become proud of. They integrate well into both Whole-language and phonetic-based instruction. This particular dictionary lists words as simple as in and as complicated as kangaroo. There are about 30 words for each letter, and 10-20 additional spaces to add words that pertain to units you are studying or words that the child just wished to use that weren't included. The print is a handwritten style, about size 18 or 20 if you compare it to word processor sizes. I find that large size print to be helpful for First grade, as the students' eyes don't skip to the wrong line as easily. There are some helpful sections in the back, including lists of months and their abbreviations, contractions, days of the week and their abbreviations, ordinal numbers, and places to list the names of classmates, friends, family, and pets. The only fault I find with this dictionary is that the handwriting is a little cramped at times and the letters occasionally touch each other, which can be confusing to children still learning letter formation. But on the whole, it's an important resource for fledgling writers at school or at home. For a spelling dictionary with more advanced words and a larger word listing per letter, look at My Spelling Dictionary by Nancy Shaw, Edupress. Happy writing!

Perfect for my students

This spelling dictionary is a great tool for students I see in my occupational therapy practice. The concise format works well for the average student learning how to read, write and spell. Also comes in handy for students with dyslexia and visual motor challenges. Each letter section also has empty spaces for students to add their own high frequency words, and separate sections for words in categories, such as days of the week and months. A fantastic tool!

I love this product very much

I love this product very much. Unfortunately, I was unable to order more than one because they want to charge you $4.00 to ship each book. So, to order a classroom set would cost an insane amount of money. Like well over 100.00. Other sellers of this product had the same policy and I found this to be prohibitive.

About the Author
About the Author Roxanne Small is a registered physical therapist with over 35 years of experience in pediatrics. Her career has included working in hospitals, schools, homes, and clinics. Roxanne teaches a course in "Developmental Environments" to health care professionals working in the field of early intervention. She and her teaching partner, Julie Erbaugh, PT also teach professional seminars regarding Chronologically Controlled Developmental Therapy. In addition, Roxanne has been a guest speaker at conventions and meetings, speaking on topics relating to sensory-motor foundations in children. The first edition of Building Babies Better was published in 2005. Roxanne has more than 25 years of first-hand experience as a parent. Roxanne and her husband, Gary, have three children, all of whom have been the motivation and impetus for Building Babies Better.

This book is an excellent resource for birth parents, adoptive parents, parents of children with disabilities, nannies, teachers and caregivers alike. The activities are clear and simple, easy to add in to your regular routines and play times. This second edition is a lovely upgrade to the first. Endless benefits of interactive facilitation of proper physical development. I give it as a shower gift to every expecting parent!

Kim Philby, called by Brown "quite possibly the greatest unhanged scoundrel in modern British history," and his father, St. John, are profiled in this dual biography. Philby pere (1885-1960), after a brilliant academic career, worked for a time in the Crown's political department in India and the Middle East, even though he despised British imperialism. He resigned from the service over financial and diplomatic irregularities in 1924. He converted to Islam and became a power in Arabia as an unofficial member of the Privy Council, but no hard evidence exists that he was a spy. Nor, despite the book's title, does Brown make that contention. Born in India, Harold Adrian Russell "Kim" Philby (1912-1987) was educated at Cambridge, where he made the acquaintance of several classmates who were to influence his life: Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt and Donald Maclean (John Cairncross, one of the Cambridge Five, is hardly mentioned in this account). Brown discusses Philby's homosexual relationships at Cambridge and his indoctrination into the Communist Party but otherwise scants these crucial years. He details Philby's luck in being cleared for the Secret Service; his work disrupting the German intelligence prior to D-Day; his postwar service as First Secretary at the British Embassy in Washington; his part in the Burgess-Maclean escape to Russia in 1951 and his exoneration by the government. Also recounted are Philby's time as a foreign correspondent in Beirut and his defection to Moscow in 1963. Spy buffs will find Brown's (Bodyguard of Lies) perspective on Philby's post-Cambridge years interesting. Photos not seen by PW.

Treason in the blood? Father as role model? Philby & Son, Spies? Such Freudian stuff aside, this is as absorbing and instructive a book as history buffs and spy-story lovers will read in the current season. Brown (The Last Hero: Wild Bill Donovan, LJ 12/92) is an old hand at spy tales. Not Kipling and perhaps not even Le Carre could have devised such a father-son story as this. Kim Philby is, of course, at the core of the notorious Burgess-Maclean case; his father is less well known as an intriguer, adventurer (not to say scoundrel), and Orientalist who played a significant role in the emergence of Britain's imperial making of the modern Middle East. True, the Burgess-Maclean-Philby-Blunt story is heavily dissected in a number of books. This one brings together the Philby story as such but not with absolute finality; unanswered questions remain to tease the reader-about moles in London and about who Philby really served. But for a book that covers the modern "great game," this is one of the best.

Two decades ago, Brown burst into the club of espionage historians with his popular Bodyguard of Lies, which unveiled the Allies' Ultra secret in World War II. Here he examines the career of the infamous British turncoat whom the Soviets buried with state honors. (To set the social and psychological context, Brown also folds in the life of Philby p{Š}ere, H. St. John. Kim, the younger blood, indisputably caused the deaths of hundreds of people, heinous enough, but mystery still envelops the magnitude of the damage he inflicted and the extent to which, if at all, he was protected from discovery by superiors in Britain's Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), or even by the CIA's James Angleton. While the SIS won't declassify its Philby file until 2025, Brown avails himself of the KGB's records and retired personnel still living who worked with S{™}ohnchen, their code name for their ace mole. His thorough research narrates Philby's recruitment in 1934 by Soviet agents and how they groomed him to penetrate the SIS, which occurred in 1940. The next 10 years, furnishing the bulk of this book, are crowded with Philby's wartime operations and concomitant rise through the ranks to a height (as chief of counterintelligence) that established his candidacy to become "C"--chief of the service. Unfortunately for him and the Soviets, his usefulness ended with the sensational defection in 1951 of comrade moles Burgess and MacLean--or did it? Brown is so skilled at synthesizing the minutiae of this case that spy catchers skulking about the stacks will inevitably be captivated by the story's outstanding enigmas. Gilbert Taylor

Five Stars for Topic; Three Stars for Research Methods

Despite the implications of the title, "Treason in the Blood," Anthony Cave Brown presents a generally well-balanced portrayal of the life of Kim Philby, one of the Soviet Union's Cambridge spies, who had penetrated deeply into MI6 during World War II. Mr. Brown's entertaining account adds missing pieces to the puzzle, beginning with Philby's childhood and his admiration for his usually absent father, St. John, an adventurer who had become a friend and adviser to King Ibn Saud. Brown also presents an absorbing narrative of Kim Philby's depressingly ambiguous reception in the Soviet Union after his hasty departure from Beirut in 1963. The book, which juxtaposes a portrayal of Philby's headstrong father (based upon the elder Philby's reminiscences and letters to his long-suffering wife) with Kim's youth, education, entry and career in espionage (much of the latter being familiar territory), is a 'page-turner' in spite of its 637 pages (including index).

As fascinating as the account of Philby's life in Beirut and Moscow is, however, the reader must be cautious. The author frequently relies uncritically upon evidence supplied by those whose own axes were sharply honed, as it were, since Philby's defection either made them look like fools or cast a shadow of complicity over them. The author also relies occasionally upon a juxtaposition of unrelated events, offering several interpretations, including gossip-- introduced by "it is said"--and leaving the worst interpretation (in respect to Philby's motives) to the last, where it will linger in his readers' minds (This rhetorical technique of innuendo will be recognizable to readers of the Ancient Roman authors, Suetonius and Tacitus.).

Perhaps the author's most infuriating fault, however, is the tendency to bring up a question that begs, if not an answer, at least some comment. For example, on p. 518 he notes that Guy Burgess on his deathbed ("is said to have") denounced Philby as a British (and therefore triple) agent, but that Burgess nevertheless bequeathed most of his precious library, some furniture, and a considerable amount of money to Philby. Then the author moves on to another topic, Philby's legal status in the Soviet Union. The reader would like to learn more about Burgess' startling allegations and their implications. Only on p. 589 do we discover from a former KGB agent that Philby could not possibly have been a "British plant" since, being under continual Soviet scrutiny, he had "no contact" with the British in Moscow. Whom are we to believe?

Keeping these caveats in mind, the reader will nevertheless be rewarded with a tale of espionage that rarely ceases to enthrall.

Treason In the Blood

Reading "Kim" Philby's auto-biography "My Silent War" (1968) was for me a little like sitting at a dinner table expecting a gourmet meal and finding nothing more than a pea. On the contrary, Anthony Cave Brown's is a fiesta; don't come to dine without bringing two mouths and a doggie bag.

I have been facinated with Kim Philby, the man, for many years. Who was he and why did he do what he did. I thought "My Silent War" was the answer. It wasn't. I was deeply disappointed. Philby fed his readers crumbs laced with deception, which is consistent with the fact that he was the embodiment of the highest level of deception, treachery and espionage in the twentieth century. No one else in the period comes close.

Anthony Cave Brown did a masterful work on Philby and the book is nothing less than "over-kill". He researched no less than 20 areas in Philby's life, from that of his paternal grandfather to the Moscow cemetary where the spy is buried. Nothing is omitted.

It was always my opinion that to understand Philby the man I would have to know Philby the child. On that score Anthony Cave Brown does not disappoint. When Philby, in his KGB-aided auto-biography refused to say where, when and how he began his life as a Soviet secret operative, Brown answered those questions masterfully.

I have read many books on Kim Philby and the Cambridge Spies. "Treason in the Blood" is THE definitive book on the life of Kim Philby. Nothing else compares, period.

The title promises more than the book delivers.

Brown paints engaging and detailed pictures of St. John and Kim Philby. The chapters on St. John are particularly interesting. To judge by Brown's book, the elder Philby led a more colorful, though less notorious life than his son Kim.
Brown ultimately fails to support his charge of treason against St. John Philby. The charge, implicit in the book's title, is never really followed through in the text. St. John, as described by Brown, was an active critic of British policy in Arabia, a gadfly, and ultimately an embittered nuisance. This is not the same as being a traitor, however.
The chapters on Kim contain no new blockbusters, though Brown draws his character deftly. Ultimately more interesting than Kim Philby the man, though, is Kim Philby the phenomenon.
Kim Philby continues to exert a fascination which extends far beyond his actual historical impact. His betrayal, and that of Burgess, MacLean, et al, seem to stand as emblematic of the decay of the English upper classes in the Post WWI period. While Brown does an admirable job painting his portrait of the man, he doesn't dwell on the question of why we still care about this brilliant, vain, aristocratic traitor.

A real page turner

I'd heard about McGregor's and Boorman's around the world ride years ago, but only recently became interested in it after I started riding a motorcycle myself. I first attempted to watch the BBC TV series on it, but quickly stopped when I realized I could get much more detailed information on the trip by reading the book.

I was right, the book proved to be much more informative, and somehow lent a different tone to the whole trip. The footage in the TV series was edited in such a way as to make it almost seem like a buddy comedy, where McGregor and Boorman are laughing and joking with each other most of the time. This is entertaining, but not what I was looking for. The book on the other hand seems to have a much more serious tone, as so much more detail is filled in that the reader realizes the amount of work and suffering they went through before they had those light moments the TV series focuses on.

As a motorcyclist I was looking for more detail relating to the gear they used for the trip and the modifications made to the motorcycles. I realize too much of such information would make the book boring to the lay reader, so I guess what was included in the book was a good compromise.

I've read a few reviews where people complained this was a supported trip, and that McGregor and Boorman were a bit whiny. In their defense it seems the support vehicles were mostly there in case something went terrible wrong, and to carry camera equipment and spare tires. For the most part they were riding completely on their own. In fact the worst accident of the trip happened to one of the two support vehicles, a Mitsubishi truck that flipped over in the dreadful dirt roads. They later abandoned it and replaced it with a Russian van.

As far as them being whiny, I do agree, but I think any amateur in their situation would also whine, but just not have an audience to hear it. For having almost no experience doing long enduro rides I think they did extremely well.

Overall I thought this was a great read and a real page turner. The writing could've been better, but I think it was just a written adaption of the video commentary they did throughout the trip. Some of the same commentary is in the series and you can tell the wording is similar. However the book does include much more detail than the series, so I think it's worth the read.

As an aside, I was curious about their cameraman Claudio von Planta and found a very interesting interview with him (on zulkey.com). It seems he's filmed all over the world, including in very dangerous and extreme environments. It's no wonder the trip seemed like it was not much of a problem for him. [...]

Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down.

I really enjoyed this book. Despite some of the negative reviews, I thought it was great. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. When it was over I was both happy and sad that the journey had ended. I followed through afterward and watched the documentary and I experienced the same emotions all over again. I don't think I would have had the same response just watching the documentary on it's own as I felt that I had a lot more inside information from the book to go along as a guide and to fill in the blanks of the show. I think the documentary is a great companion to the book.

Cons: Some of the backstory can be a little dull. Although I think it is necessary to the story as a whole. I think the trip through North America could have been a little longer.

Long Way Round-Audio Book

I wanted to hear the audio book version of their story from going around the world on 'motorbikes'.
I had recently seen the 7 hour version of their video series and wanted to hear if maybe more information would be on the Audio version as I wasn't familiar with the ride when it happened in 2004.
Overall it follows along with the video version pretty well with not too many aspects not covered in the TV series. The audio book is about 5 hours and I would have liked it better if either; 1. Ewan and Charley had voiced this version or 2. they had found different sounding readers. The person reading for Charley Boorman's sections sounded more like Ewan McGregor to me which got me mixed up on who was supposed to be talking at that point and the guy for Ewan's parts didn't sound like either of them! After while I did get used to it but I think it would have been better if they'd read it themselves. The 'extra' interview of Boorman was interesting also.
I still enjoyed hearing of their adventure as much as watching the video of their trip now almost 10 years ago! Their trips, this and "Long Way Down" to Africa started the "Adventure Bike" style that's still going strong.

For any Sports Physician

As a chiropractor that treats Auto, Work and Sports Injuries...I find myself referencing this book among others for common injuries in sport-specific scenarios. I think of it as my orthopedic sports injuries encyclopedia. I think this belongs on the shelf of trainers, physiatrists, manual therapy workers, occupational as well as physical therapists/chiropractors. If you are a medical or orthopedic massage therapists, it would benefit your practice to know the injuries your athletes are experiencing. Highly recommended.
