Veteran author John Baechtel reviews many popular modern tools, techniques, products, and testing/data-collecting machinery used in designing and developing competition engines. About the Author
John Baechtel is a former editor of Car Craft and Hot Rod magazines and was the founding partner of the Westech Performance Group engine dyno testing facility. He is also a member of the Bonneville 200 MPH club, holding both SCTA and FIA International speed records. He drove the first production-based Mustang Cobra past the 200-mph mark in 1993 and was the driving force behind the restoration of the Summers Brothers Land Speed Record car for The Henry Ford museum. With more than 34 years of high-performance engine and vehicle testing under his belt, he is still passionate about engines and high-performance technology. He currently serves as a technical consultant to several performance aftermarket companies while pursuing his interest in land speed racing and grooming his extensive collection of land speed model cars and memorabilia.

Replace your old "revised and updated" manual

Finally a completely new resource guide for competitive engine design using up-to-date technology. This guide focuses on manipulating the inter-relationships of all components to create a more powerful race engine. Explains how the "whole" can be much faster than the sum of its parts in certain combinations and why. Even re-tuning ideas for various component preferences, not one pet formula. The author explains how to use tools and collect helpful data and how to use testing and data collecting machinery properly and what to do with the results.

Although a complex subject, this book is practical and easy and enjoyable to follow. Plenty of theory but loads of practical applications and examples too. Filled with practical tips and precautions with new products evaluated. Each chapter has section headings, great photos, illustrations and bullet point boxes that kept me focused on what was most important, while keeping the reading from being too overwhelming. I felt like the author was talking with me not preaching to me. Gave me some great ideas, and helped me come up with a few of my own to try.

More speed is what we all want, right? I bet this will replace those old "revised and updated manuals out there.

I assume this was a hard book to write. The author tries to aggregate a large amount of information on competition engine building and disseminate that information. Some of the information appears to come from first principals while some is from empirical data or "experience". For the most part the information is logically organized and clear.

I don't know who exactly to recommended this book to. It is a little too detailed for a lay person to pick up and get the gist of engine building. And since it doesn't focus on any one type of the many varied types of competition I don't see a person who is serious about building an engine for a specific competition being helped much by this book. It falls into a no-mans land of usefullness sadly. Of the three Cartech books I own, I find this one the least useful to myself.

Great read

If you have never considered that we live inside a constructed hologram then you are in for a shock. But it's very interesting, I actually manifested a sore throat to deal with before I even got through the book. I was eating supper and was perfectly fine then about halfway through I got an intense pain in my throat and though it took a while I took back my power from it and it went away.

I'm still trying to figure out why I created Robert Scheinfeld

I'm still trying to figure out why I created Robert Scheinfeld in the first place or his book though his information is prime. He writes things like this: "Because the checks aren't real, the companies aren't real, the customers who bought the products and services that gave the companies the money to be able to pay me aren't real, it's all a magnificent creation and illusion, and I appreciate it."

As I get this, his cosmology is a holographic one. It is like the holodeck on the star ship Enterprise except that not only are you the person in it, you are the holographic film, and you are the projector. How does it get any better than this?

Now he talks about something called "the field" that something [maybe like God?] that creates reality or in which one creates his or her reality. From our thoughts, we create schemas or thought forms or what he terms "eggs" which are made of "belief, power, judgment and consequences." These make things seem real that aren't real.

He doesn't seem to think that just positive thinking or affirmations are enough to turn to the tide of these eggs. If you can get the eggs to break like the collapsing of a wave in quantum mechanics, they are no longer a problem. In essence, you don't want to create the dynamic that keeps them alive. Apparently our resistance with our judgments keep them going. So he recommends a kind of mental Judo that will not form the dynamics or resistance to these schemas that are for him profoundly not real.

The other strategy for dealing with them is that when say a negative thought or circumstance does comes up, one need to not resist them but to feel them completely. It reminds me of Buddhism notion of embodiment where if one has a fear of darkness, for example, one meditates on it and feels it so completely to the point it is no longer an issue. Once you have resolved those, Scheinfeld view then is to accept your truth that you are an infinite being and use that to shape your reality. It is a bit more complicated than that but that is close enough.

Solipsism is a lonely business when considering the implications. Ones customers are not real, but neither are one's loved one. Any affection is just a manifestation of one's own hologram. How one relates to the world is irrelevant because after all they don't exist or any love returned to you is just you loving you.

From Scheinfeld's paradigm, however, everything in the universe is your creation. You are god and the world around you is a reflection of your godhood. In his mind, if one were to go to Niagra Falls and witnessed overwhelming beauty if the falling water, one ought to be overjoyed at one's ability to make such a magnificent creation. To him, even going to a restaurant is kind of miracle, too. Every stick of furniture and every person in it and their lives are all created by you for you to have this experience. He is very Hindu in his point of view that way. He is Brahman experiencing Brahman.

If that is too far to go, he seems to believe in being polite to ones personal creation and the objects in it. For me, it is also a good thing to realize that money and economics is a meta-creation. It is more concept than reality. If our thoughts do create our realities and economies, then it is a very good thing to have some perspective on it. The meme that is so potent in our culture is that we are here to serve the economy rather than the economy being here to serve us. The heaven or hell we find ourselves in today is the belief that we are the ones not real and these meta-creations are. He is right that it time to understand who is the dreamer and what is the dream.

With that, I'll say this is a good book. I'm glad I dreamed it and Robert Scheinfeld up.

An interesting approach to life

I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend. I find it interesting in its approach to life, although a little extreme in saying that everything in your world is simply a made-up scenario, all the people, things and events are scripted and created by you, and that the only way to "bust loose" is to acknowledge this and "take back your power" of creativity. I ended up feeling very isolated and not "free" at all. Eventually I came to realize that this is merely another way of dealing with the concept of self-actualization, that we are after all in charge of our lives. and that our thoughts do indeed determine our destiny. My opinion is that it's an interesting book but maybe not to be taken too literally.

I actually know David Berkowitz!

Knowing David does not sway my vote to be honest. I loved the book. it was like a open and honest devotional book. I enjoyed the read and would recommend this to anyone wanting to get some spiritual encouragement.

Life Abounds!

David's writing is a ray of sunshine emanating from a place where very little gets in or out. David's love for his prison brothers and their families is shown throughout. Son of Hope will make you cry and fill you with sadness for lives which have been so damaged by sin! But, as David's life has been turned around by his acceptance of Jesus, he shows that the Love of Lord is there for everyone (Isaiah 1:18--"Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow"). David is a humble man who is living an extraordinary life (James 4:10--"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up"). Thank you David for a work so filled with the Love of the Lord.

Social and historic significance, yeah, and also a damn fine read

“Beebo Brinker” is described as ‘lesbian pulp fiction’. Written in 1962 by Ann Bannon, it is a prequel to the immensely popular series featuring this character. The series is one huge stepping stone along the path of gay and lesbian acceptance in the community.

It’s hard to know how to approach this review. Do I treat it solely as a reading experience, from my present day perspective? Do I give weight to its social and historical significance? Do I allow my emotions and heart to weigh in and give a subjective “me” review? (Well, I always do that, so I’m not going to change there).

The series has been republished by the ever-awesome Cleis Press. “Beebo Brinker’, although written last, is chronologically the first in the series. Having never read any of these before, I elected to start here.

Let me say I was quite fond of Beebo as a character. It’s hard not to feel sympathy for the awkward girl driven away from her rural home town, coming friendless and nearly penniless to New York. It’s easy to fall under the sway of her “boyish handsome face and muscular figure” and her wit and naivety. It’s harder to feel sympathy for the Beebo who treats her girlfriend (the doormat that is Paula Ash) with the same disrespect and callousness that rouses her ire when she observes her boss treating his wife the same way. But then there is so much stress on the mannish Beebo in these pages, and this was how many men treated their little women in the 1950s. See what I mean about Beebo-as-historical-document? (I will not make a Galaxy Quest reference here, oh no I won’t).

From my present day perspective, clichéd characters abound, there are a lot of early declarations of love (I remember at least three), and there’s a bit of unfinished business in the plot. But it doesn’t matter. Beebo-as-historical document again, in this case lesbian pulp fiction of the 1950s. It is what it is.

I enjoyed reading this. Sure, it dragged a little at times, and I had to make a conscious effort to overlook some things that made my present-day reading eye tsk tsk a little, and a bigger effort to overlook other things that made my present-day feminist-equality eye narrow in disgust, but the book as a whole? As uncritical, pure pleasure with a healthy dollop of sentimentality, with an awareness of what it would mean to lesbians of the era to read something like this? Loved it.

This is a great example of pulp fiction for that time an era. However many of the analogies presented and situtaion outcomes in this book still hold true for today. It is a worthwhile read. For those of us who read this book more than 20 years ago should go back and reread it today.

Up until this time, since 1930, virtually all children in America had learned to read from the book “Dick and Jane”. As this book demonstrated, Dick and Jane had unnatural dialogue and was not interesting to children. Dr. Rudolf Flesch was born on 8 May 1911 in Vienna, Austria. Trained as a lawyer in his native Vienna, Rudolf Flesch came to the USA in 1938. After taking his doctorate of philosophy a Columbia University, he taught at New York University and contributed to Harper's Magazine, Liberty, The American Mercury and other magazines. While giving Americans a new insight into their own language, Rudolf Flesch wrote books How to Test Readability (1951), How to Write Better (1951), The Art of Plain Talk (1946), The Art of Readable Writing (1949), The ABC of Style: A Guide to Plain English (1964), and Rudolf Flesch on Business Communications: How to Say What You Mean in Plain English (1972). His books achieved sales of over 180,000 copies. Dr. Flesch served as a consultant on readability for the Associated Press and for a large number of publishers, government agencies, educational organizations and corporations. He became a freelance writer and editorial consultant and lectured at New York University. He died on 5 October 1986.

About the Author

Prior to founding Farmer & Company in 1992, Michael Farmer was a strategy consultant with The Boston Consulting Group and a Director of Bain & Company. He headed Bain’s Munich, Paris and London offices during Bain’s decade of European expansion in the 1980s. Michael lived and worked in Brazil, Switzerland, Turkey, Germany, France and UK for more than 20 years. He was associate dean at the Harvard School of Public Health and Professor of Naval Science at Iowa State University.

The Most Important Book About Advertising Since Ogilvy's Confessions

I've spent 30 years in the agency business and have read just about every book you can imagine about advertising and the agency business. I come from an advertising family -- my father was a Mad Man working side-by-side with David Ogilvy and other members of the Advertising Hall of Fame.

Long story short -- advertising is very near and dear to my heart. As such, I've been disheartened to witness the challenges agencies have been going through over the past several decades. (As an example, the American Association of Advertising Agencies reports that the average length of a client/agency relationship in the 1990s was 8 years -- today, it's 3 years, if that.)

The good news is there's hope, and it comes in the form of Michael Farmer's book. Mr. Farmer is a management consultant who has worked for some of the world's most well-respected consulting firms. More importantly, he has worked for the past several decades as a consultant with many of the world's largest agencies and holding companies.

This well-researched and insightful book doesn't just point out the problems agencies are facing. Instead, it provides a step-by-step action plan on how to identify the problems for your own agency and work towards a solution.

If you're as concerned about your own agency, or the ad agency business, buy this book. It's packed with information you can use to turn your agency around and get it back to where it needs to be.

Ad agency and holding company CEO’s miss this at their peril.

There is no question that the advertising agency business I used to know, love, and profit from, is in a radical state of change, not to mention confusion, perhaps even panic? Back in my Mad Man days, you could reach over eighty percent of American consumers to sell toilet rolls, or as P&G preferred to call them “Bathroom Tissues” via Mr. Whipple on three TV networks. You could also sell pre-filter Pall Mall cigarettes, “You can light either end,” via three national weekly magazines. It was an era when media plans were done on cocktail napkins during a three martini lunch, and on returning to the office, you had your secretary type it up whilst you had a nap on your office coach.
Today, things are slightly different. With the growth of digital and social media the multiplicity of choices to reach consumers is only matched by the multiplicity of choices consumers have to ignore you. But, it isn’t merely the proliferation of new media that has led to the impending demise of ad agencies as we know them; I would suggest that it’s the stranglehold of the ever powerful holding companies over their subservient agencies that is inexorably pushing us to the end of relationships that have served clients and their agencies well for many years.
I was saved from throwing my hands up in despair when I read Michael Farmer’s wonderful new book, “Madison Avenue Manslaughter.” This is an extremely well thought out exposition of how we have arrived at this state of affairs, whilst presenting the most convincing arguments yet posited for how we can hopefully address the situation. As he puts it so simply, yet forcibly… “Workload is growing faster than income.” Putting this in terms that even I can understand, it means that once an agency is acquired by a holding company, its prime function is to meet the quarterly numbers the holding company needs to keep its shareholders happy… Not to mention the holding companies CEO’s upkeep on luxury apartments, villas, yachts and “Rollers.”
Meantime, at the other end of the s***ty stick is the unfortunate fact of life that the holding companies agency clients are now treating them in the same way they deal with suppliers of mops, brooms and stationary. In other words, bean counter procurement people will be responsible for negotiating agency fees. Which means that agencies can look forward to having the cost of their “Big Idea” looked at in a similar purchasing fashion as providers of “Big Toilet Rolls.” Unless the client is P&G, in which case it will be “Big Bathroom Tissue.” Oh, and can we now pay your invoices on a 120 day at the earliest, schedule?
Inevitably, the holding companies and their subservient agencies succumb to this pressure, agreeing to cut fees and accept delayed payment without suggesting the clients accept longer delivery times and less of a cornucopia of creative offerings. Then when, a few months later, the procurement people turn the screws an extra twist or two, the agencies knuckle down and go along with the ever decreasing game.
Michael Farmer has several rather gnarly suggestions to fix this problem. Essentially, the key is the measurement and management of the agency workload necessary to be able to create the client’s expected deliverables, and to do it in such a way as to justify the fair income and profitability that will satisfy the management of both the agency and its holding company. Further, he suggests a complete rethink of the agency structure and operations, making many detailed suggestions from staffing to remuneration. Finally, he lays the onus on agency management, particularly the CEO; to admit to themselves that they are steaming towards a Titanic sized iceberg and it’s almost too late launch the lifeboats.
On a final, final note, apart from Madison Avenue Manslaughter being required reading for all Agency management. I would put a gun to the heads of the CEO’s of the major holding companies until they have read it from cover to cover. After all, most of this mess is their fault.
