There are so many times I've been told to hold onto books for nursing school because I will "use them throughout my career". This is the only one I am holding onto. Easy to read, gets to the point, organized fabulously. Even if you're not going to become a critical care nurse I think it's a great resource to have.

Mysterious figures and events of the Bible.

Authors, Lionel and Patrician Fanthorpe, are researchers who can never be accused of non objectivity. They apply their inexhaustible mental and physical energy into digging and delving and extracting every last atom of evidence pertaining to anything they investigate with a view to writing about it. Their attentions to the Bible have not proved to be exceptions to the rule.
No matter what 'reading' may be applied to the Bible, whether by a believer in its literal sense as the Word of God, or by a curious seeker of the content of ancient writings, the Book contains a liberal serving of mystery and puzzlement.
Most of us once owned a tiny toy boat with a lid on: to and from which we patiently offloaded and onloaded dinky animals; usually in pairs -- or at least they were until some of them inevitably disappeared under the settee. Anyone, believer or unbeliever, who has read the story of Noah's Ark knows of how the hero, Noah, built a vessel upon the command of, and according to the specifications of, God, in order to protect his family and all animal species from the wrath of the Flood. Most of us tend not to consider the fate of the Ark thereafter. Not so the Fanthorpes. They have identified at least two possible locations for its final 'docking', as well as witnesses who have attested to its petrified or frozen remains still existing -- and with dimensions eerily close to those stated in the Biblical account of its construction.
Moses, the leader of the Israelites: was his encounter with the burning bush a confrontation with a manipulative, devious god intent on proving that the Pharaoh could be cruelly outsmarted, or with a beneficent being who conversed with him about the wisdom of avoiding ensuing tragedies?
What were those incredible stones, the Urim and Thummim, entrusted to the mysterious Hermes Trismegistus: he who became identified by the ancient Egyptians as the scribe, Thoth?
Did the progeny of the passionate affair between Solomon and Sheba remove the Ark of the Covenant from his father's keeping? What was the source of its ancient power; and where is it now?
These and many other puzzles posed between the pages of the Bible are examined in depth, with neither complacency nor bias, by the tireless Fanthorpes. Their book is a treasure which makes one very inclined indeed to get that battered old Bible out and read it again in the light of their elucidating deductions. Their excellent work is never easy to put down, but if you can do so just long enough to locate your bible, reading the two, one alongside the other, in cross reference, is recommended.

Extremely Misleading

I found this book mildly entertaining but overall extremely misleading and not at all what I thought it might be. Luckily, I only paid four dollars for it. It's going in the recycling bin.

The description in the back of the book claims that "All these intriguing questions, and many more, are answered in Mysteries of the Bible." But the reality is that this book is short on answers and extremely long on speculation. And when I say speculation, I don't just mean your regular run of the mill academic speculation, limited to rational or biblically supernatural explanations. Oh, no. These authors throw everything from extraterrestrials to radio transmitters and nuclear bombs (yes, could it be that Sodom and Gomorrah were actually destroyed by a nuclear explosion? GASP!) at the mysteries that defy explanation, which is most of them. In fact, I think the only mystery that was biblically explained, and quite satisfactorily, was The Mysterious Power of Prayer.

I was beginning to enjoy some of the book, thinking that though extremely quirky, at the very least I got a few chuckles out of it, and I thought their research might be thorough for what it was, but the warm fuzzy feeling disappeared when, to my horror, in trying to explain what the Urim and Thummim could be they resorted to stating as if it were some sort of plausible lead "Smith also reported that these mysterious engraved gold tablets were in a language which he called 'reformed Egyptian.' All of which, strange as it sounds, may have more than a few strands of amazing truth in it." Unfortunately what the authors failed to clarify is that Joseph Smith Jr. has been thoroughly proven to be a charlatan of the first order, who was unable to decipher any sort of Egyptian writing at all and when given the opportunity proceeded to produce a number of "translations" that were eventually proven to be utter gibberish. Moreover, they fail to mention that the so-called gold plates that Smith claimed to have translated were supposedly given back to the angel who first offered them for Smith to translate and therefore there were never any witnesses to any plates ever having existed at all, and therefore no possible way of ever corroborating whether these non-existent gold tablets could have been the Urim and Thummim anyhow. Why would these authors knowingly follow a lead and not clarify these details but leave this as a valid possibility for consideration? How many other of their possible clues, aside from the ubiquitous and obvious "extraterrestrials" and their "technologies" are completely lacking in credibility in this book? Their bibliography is certainly dismally short, and six of the sources cited are their very own previous publications.

At the very least this thing is published under the wrong rubric, and should have been published as science fiction.

Finally, I am deeply resentful that this thing received public funding from the Canada Council for the Arts. I cannot believe how my government chooses to waste my hard-earned tax dollars.

5 sexy spookalicious stars and a tingly, shivery satisfied sigh!

Supernatural devilment strikes again for the intrepid ghostbusting quartet, in this equally fabulous follow up to the fantastic Restless Spirits. Only this time round, it's not just metaphysical mishaps they have to overcome.

As well as having to face the full force of a vengeful spirit with murder and mayhem on her mind, there are also adversities of a more earthly nature threatening to dissolve Henry and Victors professional partnership and fast growing romance, including personal insecurities, trust issues, and the appearance of Sylvester 'The Great' Orsini; an imposing professional medium and great friend of Dunne, Victor and Lizzy's mentor, who died at the hands of a possessed Victor. A horrific memory Victor constantly carries with him, that alongside the guilt of the act has him fearing the spirit returning to possess him again.

Orsini's influence and past dealings with the two younger psychics, plus his wariness and disdain of Henry's scientific input into the spiritual world, doesn't help when things get hairy in Devils Walk Pennsylvania, the town they're sent to, to hopefully banish a violent ghost that's scaring the townsfolk and construction crew working there literary to death ...and its there, that things begin to go even more emotionally south for the two conflicted MC's.

Initially though, it starts to go wrong when after six months together as lovers and fairly successful business partners, the Baltimore Psychical Society cruelly reject Henry Strauss's electromagnetic scientific findings, revoke his membership and send him packing.

And it's then, in a momentary fit of self doubt that an already dejected and totally humiliated Henry lie's to his lover about his failure and harsh dismissal, and the rest of his closely knit group, leaving them all with the notion that his meeting was a rip roaring success, and therefore beneficial to the further growth and prosperity of their business.

As soon as the words are out of his mouth he wants to take them back but of course the moment either keeps getting interrupted or his nerve just fails him, and the more time passes, the more the fears of how everyone (especially Victor) will take it begin to take their toll on Henry, making it harder and harder for him to finally confess the truth.

It was a real "OH, OH!!" moment and the instant I knew that this time there was going to be even more heart thumping emotional conflict as well as the highly anticipated edge of your seat excitement, spine tingling spookiness and sizzling sexy times! I loved the way it all melded together; making this another utterly engrossing five star read for me.

Henry, Victor, Lizzy and Jo are four fascinating characters in their own right. Diverse, multi layered characters with intriguing personality quirks, in-depth past histories... and a surprising twist in one of their cases you learn about in book one, that I don't think anyone really see's coming. Clever! They're all so lovable that you can't help but care and get deeply drawn into their stories. I really rooted for them to come through every trial and tribulation thrown at them!

With a spook filled cast of just as three dimensional supporting characters, who really made the excitement and mystery pop even more, once again I was completely caught up in their adventures and could have read on much longer.

I absolutely love Jordan L. Hawk and her different takes on the paranormal genre. A true storyteller, she spins a great yarn every time. Whether it's contemporary urban fantasy, an alternate arcane historical universe or in this case a real time in history when a fascination for death and the afterlife, and the spiritual v science argument was wildly debated and explored—for me—this is an author who just makes everything she writes about feel thrilling, fresh and innovative every time she invents a new set of characters and I just adore her books. I get really excited when I know there's another Hawk on the horizon!

So, I'm just hoping there's more creepy conundrums to come for these four historical ghost hunters!

Because....

Whichever or whenever ghosts come a knockin'...my dosh is definitely on Henry, Victor and the two feisty girls giving them a run for their money every time! Lol... 5 sexy, spookalicious stars and a tingly, shivery satisfied sigh!

Spirited Second Adventure for Night & Strauss

The second book in Jordan L. Hawk’s Spirits series is just as involving, sexy, and, dare I say it, spirited as the first. Events move at a brisk pace, carrying the characters along and almost forcing the character growth to be “on the fly,” so to speak. There’s very little time for characters to sit lost in their own thoughts when there are both supernatural and natural dangers to be dealt with.
Not that there isn’t any character introspection going on. It’s a Jordan L. Hawk book – if each half of the main couple wasn’t struggling with doubt as to whether the other half loves him, I’d probably feel like something was missing! This time out the issue for Vincent and Henry is less whether they love each other and more whether they will continue to love each other in light of the secrets each is keeping. The secret each man is keeping is borne of embarrassment more than anything else, but those are sometimes the hardest secrets to reveal. Complicating the pair’s already poor communication skills is the fact that their secrets will also affect the women in their lives: Henry’s teenage cousin, and Vincent’s partner Lizzy (who is quickly becomes one of my favorite trans* characters in genre fiction, and I hope she’s given a larger role in succeeding books). As so often happens in real life, these relatively unimportant secrets lead to numerous misunderstandings which complicate the team’s investigation.
That investigation has multiple layers to it: a shameful town history that comes to bear on a new construction project meant to revitalize the area is layered with ghosts, magical items, secrets and betrayals. Determining the nature of the fiery spirit wreaking havoc and discovering how to stop her involves several interesting twists, and Hawk sprinkles in just enough red herrings that I was genuinely taken by surprise at least once as to what was going on.
The danger presented by the spirit is palpable from her first appearance (which reminded me quite a bit of a certain scene in Stephen King’s ‘Salem’s Lot that scared the hell out of me when I was 13) and never lessens. There’s a particular scene in the woods after which I needed to put the book down and walk away for a few minutes. (But just a few.)

The town’s secrets, both past and present, are echoed in the book’s emotional drama. The team joins the best friend of Vincent and Lizzy’s tragically deceased mentor, and more information comes to light about Vincent and Lizzy’s childhoods. The old friend’s agenda is clear to the reader much sooner than it becomes clear to Vincent and Henry, but even here there are some delightful twists.

Everything, supernatural and emotional, comes to a head in the final pages in a really satisfying conclusion that also sets up future books in the series.

Paranormal Romance that breaks so many molds! Highly Recommended!

I love many things about this book, and really this series as a whole. If you haven't read the first one, do that now!

Firstly, I love the diversity in this book. Most obviously, the story centers around two gay men living in the late nineteenth century, when homosexuality was certainly not widely accepted. However, one of those men is a Native American medium (whose commentary on stereotypes associated with that are always entertaining), something that is very uncommon in romances that don't take place on the frontier. He is also extremely close to a transgender woman who is awesome and important to the storyline. Then there is Jo, Henry's half black, half white cousin who is a clever teen engineer. One of these things might appear in a romance and usually they are a side plot and unimportant to the story, but in this series the the author acknowledges these qualities and their effect on the people with whom the characters interact.

Secondly, I love Vincent and Henry. They are a really adorable couple feeling out what amounts to their first real romantic relationship (I don't count Isaac due to the power difference between a young teen Henry and an adult who exploits his grief). Although I wanted to strangle Henry a little for hiding the events at the Society from everyone for so long, I totally understood why he didn't do so in the beginning. Who wants to share failure to a lover in front of a stranger?

Thirdly, the ghost story was wonderful. I don't usually like ghosts and stories centering around them, but this was done so well I couldn't put the book down. I thought the ghost and situation was interesting and I was not expecting the turn at the end. Though, perhaps I should have. It was cool to have a colonial ghost story and get some insight to that world.

The only disappointing thing about this book is that there isn't another one I can immediately begin reading (at this time in March 2016). I hope there will be more Henry and Vincent stories. Especially because we still haven't gotten resolution around the poltergeist that killed Dunne. Lots of options, all of which I would read!

TLDR; The book is fantastic. A lovely gay romance with paranormal elements set in historical USA with a diverse cast. Highly recommended!

Picking up where the cliffhanger left off

I know I am kind of repeating my review from part one, but I really feel the same way. The characters were great, likable, easy to relate to, and easily understood. Natalie and Ryan are still a wonderful couple and I love that they are sticking to one another through everything-including the many difficulties they face as a couple. I still feel that part one and part two should have been combined into one complete book. As part two ended, the story could be left alone or another book could follow if the author chooses. I hope she does choose to continue the story in the future because I still have some unanswered questions and hope for this couple. However, I could be content with the ending as it is as well.

Beta reading for Element, Part 2 by author CM Doporto, went smoothly with no bumps on the road in sight! After beta reading and reviewing Element, Part 1 (which is highly suggested, but not required) my anticipation level was to the max, and this author never misses a beat. With a more than solid storyline and maturing character development, this read was extremely hard to put down. Lies...deceipt...truth...Leaving you on the edge of your seat til the very end. I absolutely love the cover too! I'm rating this read 5 Stars for amazeballs storyline, insanely good character development, and superb editing.

Kind of Better than the first...

Natalie:

She seems very trusting in this book... she was ready to be probed and poked just to have a cure... I know someone will do anything just to be normal again it's just that she seems naive for trusting someone they barely know...

Story:

Let's just say that I'm 50-50 with this one... As I said in the first book, the idea itself was interesting but the conversations were not that good... they still sound corny and cheesy... and I still wasn't able to connect with the characters...

But on the good side there were some povs that were added giving the readers idea on what is happening in the other characters...

And then my suspicion was confirmed... I really don't like reading books wherein the character is being forced to do something he or she doesn't want to... I feel pity for him or her and hatred to the one forcing him or her...

Overall, it was a nice read but not enough for me to like it... their conversations were a major factor why I'm not really a fan of it... but I want to tell you that the ending was a cliffhanger but not really a cliffhanger, well at least for my it was like that...

Pudd'nhead Wilson (1894) was Mark Twain's last serious work of fiction, and perhaps the only real novel that he ever produced. Written in a more sombre vein than his other Mississippi writings, the novel reveals the sinister forces that Mark Twain felt to be threatening the American dream. In spite of a plot which includes child swapping, palmistry, and a pair of Italian twins, this astringent work also raises the serious issue of racial differences.

This volume also includes two other late works `Those Extraordinary Twins' and `The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg'.

Great Book Marred By An Absolutely Terrible Introduction

If you buy this book, dive straight into the Twain works themselves and completely skip the introduction which contains such inane and unintelligible howlers as "Mark Twain has proved to be a one book author" and "every reader of Huckleberry Finn feels that the end of the novel is artistically mismanaged" and "Mark Twain's difficulties in writing the fully articulated novel consonant with the mood into which his mature experience had precipitated him are most evident in the construction of his eponymous hero."

I have no idea who R.D. Gooder is, but all I can say is that I am glad I did not have any literature professors like him. Stick with the unadulterated versions of Twain such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Cambridge World Classics) Special Kindle Enabled Features (Mark Twain Collection) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Cambridge World Classics Edition) Special Kindle Enabled Features (Mark Twain Collection)

Absolutely joyful and totally entertaining with mystery.

As entertaining as any of Mark Twain's works. Fun for all ages. Great stroy and lessons in life as well as Twain's great gift for humor, subtle and obvious. Totally entertaining with enough drama to keep your interest. Great for entertainment, education or teaching.

It's too bad "Pudd'nhead" isn't more widely read as an example of Mark Twain, as it's probably one of his more interesting novels. 'Twas risky business for Twain to be writing about a little white boy who's mistaken for black and a little black boy who gets treated like a white kid, but that's part of what makes it so intriguing! Uninitiated readers will likely find the language a bit hard to get into in the beginning, but it becomes easier once you get into the groove of reading it. "Pudd'nhead" contains tons of thought-provoking themes on society, especially nature vs. nurture. For me, "Those Extraordinary Twins" is probably the funniest part of the story line. That farce alone is worth a read because it's so outrageous and unbelievable. Humor and storytelling like this is what has made people fall in love with Twain's writing.
