Moving and enlightening

I read this book to shreds when I was a teenager. It is quite old-fashioned in its setting, but the strong story and the personalities could never be old-fashioned. The two sisters, Marguerite and Marianne, are very different and represent two different possibilities for a woman's life. Strong-minded Marianne's personality is more stylish according to the standards of today, but gentle Marguerite has a strength and wisdom of her own that one could also learn from. The part where the sisters talk to each other as old ladies is one of my favorite things in all literature. I also love the depiction of the (really clueless) character William that the girls are both in love with and how he grows as a man, even though he is never that bright. If you read this, you won't be sorry. As one reader noted, there is some silly thinking about people from other races in certain parts of the book, but although I am black, I found this only mildly annoying and I think it can be easily skipped over.
And one of the most interesting sections in the book is when Marianne is forced to live as a Maori and learns a great deal of respect for them and their way of life, in spite of herself. The destruction of their culture is presented as a tragedy, in a very thoughtful way.
Goudge was a very intelligent writer and should be better known. You need to read this book with an open mind; the characters don't behave as we are taught to expect to in the late twentieth century, but there is much to think about and much to learn. Certainly it will make you question some of your assumptions about women's lives.

Making a good job of a

I first read Green Dolphin Street as a teenager after seeing a television replay of the MGM movie version of the book and becoming curious about 19th century New Zealand and the Maori civil wars. Since then, I�ve reread it two or three times and always find myself engrossed in the characters and the wonderful descriptions of the landscapes they inhabit. Goudge is a very lyrical writer whose vivid portrayals of people, places, and things stimulate your imagination and make you feel you are right there living the story with them. A strong thread of spirituality or religion runs through her books, which isn�t my personal cup of tea, but the author never lets these elements take center stage. Her focus is very much on character and character development, and she creates complex individuals who are multi-dimensional � never black and white. They keep you interested and turning the pages to find out what�s going to happen next.
The basic plot in Green Dolphin Street follows the life choices of two very different sisters, Marianne and Marguerite, and the man they both love, William Ozanne. All three form a bond as teenagers living on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel during the mid 1800s. The author does a truly marvelous job depicting the charm of the windswept city of St Pierre � its sunny sheltered streets, high-walled gardens, and tall granite houses, all softened by roses, hydrangeas, lavender hedges, and tangled vines. Marianne at age 16 is dark, elfin, and intelligent: �There might have been beauty in her black eyes had they not been so needle sharp under the heavy black brows . . . and so full of a hunger that disturbed one in the eyes of so young a girl . . . and the lips, folded in so mature a repression of her passionate temper, and the brain that was too quick and hard and brilliant for her years and sex.� Marguerite, at age 11, is gentle and easy-going: �She had taken to herself her mother�s fair beauty and as much�and no more�of her father�s intelligence as it was desirable that a pretty child should have, and to them some good fairy had added something else, the best of all gifts, the power of enjoyment, not just animal enjoyment of good health and good spirits but that authentic love of life that sees good days.�
Each sister quickly and secretly determines that William is the love of her life. William, in turn, is immediately drawn to one of the girls, but he is a somewhat absent-minded and indolent lad and when as a young adult, making a living harvesting lumber in New Zealand, he sends for his true love, he writes the wrong name in the letter! The consequences of his mistake and how he and his new wife hammer out their relationship (over the next 40 years) is the focus of most of the book. The changes each of the three main characters goes through during the course of the novel reflect three deep cravings of the self: the restless craving that makes man a wanderer looking for a better country, the craving of the lover searching for the perfect mate, and the inner craving for perfection and spiritual purity.
In contrast to civilized St. Pierre, life in turn of the century New Zealand settlements was rough, crude, and often dangerous. Again, Goudge does a great job evoking the atmosphere of New Zealand�s primitive forests and William�s lumber camp. There�s also some great action�an earthquake and a frightening attack by rebellious Maoris�as well as wonderful secondary characters, including the foul-mouthed parrot Old Nick, William�s mentor Tai Haruru (a former Englishman gone �native�), colorful Captain O�Hara and his glorious clipper ship, and the crippled fiercely loyal first mate Nat. For those who enjoy a complicated romance taking place in exotic historical settings (think Forever Amber and Gone With the Wind), I think you�ll like this book.

Soul Mates

I too, read this book when I was a child... it was a treasure I found on my Gandparents bookshelves. They gave their copy to me and I'm now reading it again, 25 yrs later. It is an intense story of two sisters; one who is ambitous, strong and stubborn, the other who is sweet, caring and easy going. Both of excellent character and intentions. It reflects an ageless story of childhood devotion blooming into infatuation or love. And the odd twists in life that send us down different roads. My oldest impression of this book was the way these roads led one of the sisters to meet her soul mate and the other to meet her soul's salvation. In all things destiny controls. This book has adventure, travel, love and colorful characters. All in all, a very good read.

Chapter 1

The stranger didn’t shatter Adam’s world all at once.

That was what Adam Price would tell himself later, but that was a lie. Adam somehow knew right away, right from the very first sentence, that the life he had known as a content suburban married father of two was forever gone. It was a simple sentence  on  the  face  of  it,  but there was  something   in  the  tone, something  knowing  and  even  caring,  that  let Adam  know  that nothing  would ever be the same.

“You didn’t have to stay with her,” the stranger said.

They were in the American Legion Hall in Cedarfield, New Jersey. Cedarfield was a town loaded up with wealthy hedge fund managers and bankers and other financial masters-of-the-universe types. They liked to drink  beer in the American  Legion Hall  be- cause  it was  comfortable slumming,  a way  to  pretend  that  they were  salt-of-the-earth good  ol’ boys,  like something  in a Dodge Ram commercial, when they were anything  but.

Adam stood by the sticky bar. There was a dartboard behind him. Neon signs advertised Miller Lite, but Adam had a bottle of Budweiser in his right hand.  He turned to the man, who had just sidled up to him, and even though Adam already knew the answer, he asked the man, “Are you talking to me?”

The guy was younger than most of the fathers, thinner, almost gaunt, with big, piercing blue eyes. His arms were white and reedy with a hint of a tattoo showing beneath one of the short sleeves. He was wearing a baseball cap. He wasn’t quite a hipster, but there was something of a wonk attitude coming off him, like some guy who ran a tech department and never saw the sun.

The  piercing  blue  eyes held Adam’s  with  an  earnestness  that made  him  want  to  turn  away. “She told you she was pregnant, right?”

Adam felt his grip on the bottle tighten.

“That’s why you stayed. Corinne told you she was pregnant.”

It was right then that Adam felt some kind of switch go off in his chest, as if someone had tripped the red digital timer on some movie bomb and now it had started to tick down. Tick, tick, tick, tick.

“Do I know you?” Adam asked.

“She told you she was pregnant,” the stranger continued. “Corinne, I mean. She told you she was pregnant and then she lost the baby.”

The American Legion Hall was loaded up with town dads sporting those white baseball T-shirts with the three-quarter sleeves and either baggy cargo shorts or perfectly no-assed Dad jeans. Lots of them wore baseball caps. Tonight was the fourth-, fifth-, and sixth- grade boys’ lacrosse draft and A-team selections. If you ever wanted to witness type As behaving as such in their natural habitat, Adam thought, watch when parents get involved in their own offsprings’ team selections.

The Discovery Channel should film this.

“You felt obligated to stay, am I right?” the man asked. “I don’t know who the hell—”

“She lied, Adam.” The younger man spoke with such conviction, not just as though he knew for certain but that, at the end of the day, he had Adam’s best interest at heart. “Corinne made it all up. She was never pregnant.”

The words kept landing like punches, dazing Adam, sapping his resistance, leaving him shaken and confused and ready to take a standing  eight count. He wanted to fight back, grab the guy by the shirt, toss him across the room for insulting his wife like this. But he didn’t for two reasons.

One, there was the whole  dazed-like-taking-punches, sapped- resistance thing.

Two, something about the way the man spoke, something about the guy’s confident tone, the damn conviction in his voice, made Adam start thinking it might be smartest to listen.

“Who are you?” Adam asked. “Does it matter?”

“Yeah, it does.”

“I’m the stranger,” he said. “The stranger with important knowledge. She lied to you, Adam. Corinne.  She was never pregnant. It was all a ruse to get you back.”

Adam shook his head. He swam through, tried to stay rational and calm. “I saw the pregnancy test.”

“Fake.”

“I saw the sonogram.”

“Again fake.” He held up a hand before Adam could say more. “And yes, so was the stomach.  Or should I say stomachs.  Once Corinne started to show, you never saw her naked, right? What did she do, claim some kind of late-night sickness so you wouldn’t have sex? That’s what happens most times.  So when the miscarriage occurs, you can kinda look back on the whole thing and realize the pregnancy was difficult right from the start.”

A booming voice from the other side of the hall called out, “Okay, guys, grab a fresh beer and let’s get this show on the road.” The voice belonged to Tripp Evans, the president of the lacrosse league, a former Madison Avenue ad exec and a pretty good guy. The other dads started to grab aluminum chairs, the kind you use for your kid’s school concert, from a rack and placed them in a circle around the room. Tripp Evans looked over at Adam, spotted the undoubtedly pale expression on his face, and frowned his concern. Adam shook him off and turned back to the stranger.

“Who the hell are you?”

“Think of me as your savior. Or like the friend who just released you from prison.”

“You’re full of crap.”

All conversation had pretty much ended.  The voices were hushed now, the sounds of scraping chairs echoing in the still hall. The fathers were getting their game faces on for the draft. Adam hated this. He wasn’t even supposed to be here—Corinne was. She was the treasurer of the lacrosse board, but her school had changed the scheduling of her teachers’ conference in Atlantic City, and even though this was the biggest day of the year for Cedarfield lacrosse— indeed the main reason Corinne had become so active—Adam had been forced to step in for her.

“You should be thanking me,” the man said. “What are you talking about?”

For the first time, the man smiled. It was, Adam couldn’t help but notice, a kind smile, the smile of a healer, of a man who just wants to do the right thing.

“You’re free,” the stranger said. “You’re a liar.”

“You know better, don’t you, Adam?”

From across the room, Tripp Evans called, “Adam?”

He turned toward them. Everyone was seated now except Adam and the stranger.

“I have to go now,” the stranger whispered.

“But if you really need proof, check your Visa card.  Look for a charge to Novelty Funsy.”

“Wait—”

“One more thing.” The man leaned in close. “If I were you, I’d probably run DNA tests on your two boys.”

Tick, tick, tick . . . ka-boom. “What?”

“I have no evidence on that, but when a woman is willing to lie about something like this, well, it’s a pretty good bet it isn’t her first time.”

And then, with Adam dazed anew by this final accusation, the stranger hurried out the door.

In Harlan Coben's, THE STRANGER, the Price family ...

In Harlan Coben's, THE STRANGER, the Price family is living the American dream, or so it seemed. Adam, the husband and father, is a successful and respected attorney in the small suburban town of Cedarfield, New Jersey. The wife, Corinne, is the mother of two teenage boys, Thomas and Ryan, top high school lacrosse athletes. She is also treasurer on the prestigious school lacrosse governing board. A stranger approaches Adam at the American Legion Hall following a lacrosse practice session. In a short two-minute conversation the stranger turns the lives of Adam and his family upside down. The seemingly nonthreatening stranger apparently knows family secrets that threaten the Price's marriage and possibly their very existence. How the stranger knew of the family secrets remain a mystery throughout most of the story. As the narrative progresses there are a number of new characters and venues introduced. In this age of internet and social media one innocent mistake can cause deadly consequences. Coben squeezes this possibility into the scenario. The story's slalom-style paths keep the reader eagerly turning pages. Coben is well known for his suspenseful writing. In The Stranger he pours it on and turns the novel into a can't-put-it-down read. I give this page turner a 4 ½-star rating.

Gripping but Not One of My Favorite Coben Books

Not my favorite Harlan Coben book and I've read all of them. The story is still good, but doesn't compare to some of his other books. If you have not read Coben don't start with this one. Read Missing You, Tell No One, The Innocent, No Second Chance. I mean this is good, it's just not great like all of his other books. The concept is amazing, but somewhere along the way too many plot lines intertwined and they didn't have enough thread to connect them which made the ending seem forced. I also didn't really like the ending. It's hard to write a review for a book that had some compelling characters, a fantastic concept, but didn't finish with the same tenacity and adrenaline surge I've come to expect with Coben's books. He is a fantastic storyteller and writes with ease. His unique voice is refreshing and I love how he incorporates social media and so many other trending issues into his story lines. He is an excellent author, one of my top five favorite all time authors. He is the absolute best at writing real and authentic dialogue that truly resonates with you. This book just wasn't one of his best - or better said, wasn't one of my favorites. Don't get me wrong. It is full of suspense and I read it in one or two sittings. I just didn't have that ... don't want it to end feeling that I normally have with this author. It begins super strong, hooked me in the first few pages and the intensity grew, but for me it fell flat in the end.

Another great Cobeh thriller

This Harlan Coben novel, "The Stranger," is chilling. Several individuals are approached by a stranger who reveals to them a dark secret about an important person in their lives. In each case, the person who has been surprised by the stranger must decide how to act upon this new information. In a major plot thread, Adam must decide if he wife, Corinne, is who she appears to be, or if she is in fact hiding a secret. He confronts her, and she disappears? Adam is forced to conduct an extensive search, bringing his sons into the mystery of where Corinne may have gone - and why. The answer is not one that I had anticipated.

No matter how many of Coben's novels I read, he always manages to keep me guessing and engaged. After I finish a book, and I ready to dive into the next one.

Materials science of machining

An important aspect of this book is that authors have a background in materials science and plot a detailed view of what happens between the tool and workpiece; which makes it very valuable. The book has separate chapters for each cutting tool class (HSS, Carbides, and Ceramics). However, the book is written to be studied by graduate students, rather than being professionally developed for teaching in classrooms (unlike e.g. Callister's materials science book).
The book does not have much about machine tools and it may disappoint people that buy this book based on its title to learn about machining and machine shop tips and tricks. It is important to note that the machining science and engineering is a broad field with a wide range of audience (from CNC operators, programmers, cutting tool and machine tool designers) and it would be impossible to cover the whole field in a single book.

Readable and Enjoyable

The Past in Perspective is a book on human and cultural evolution designed for undergraduates with no previous work in archaeology (xx). So, this will introduce plenty of new words in bold font, but usually have them defined for you in the context, either directly or indirectly. There were only a couple of words where I didn't feel it did this. PiP will introduce the human story of evolution essentially to the layman or amateur, then. Though it is technically an archaeology textbook, it didn't quite seem like it. Feder's writing flows well and it's very readable. There are tons of helpful pictures, diagrams, graphs and charts that will help give a picture to what is often being discussed in the text.

All in all, this is probably the most readable and enjoyable archaeological textbook I have read (not that I've read a ton, but I have read a few). As I said, this one didn't quite *seem* like a textbook. Feder is capable of bringing difficult issues in the archaeological record and translating them so most readers can understand. He also has a good ability at being fair when comparing and contrasting intra-mural debates within archaeology or anthropology. I paid around eighty dollars for this a few years ago and now it looks like you can get it for practically nothing. Guess that's the way textbooks go. I would still recommend this edition if you don't want to pay so much for the newest one.

Very Good for More than Just Prehistory

Surprisingly, this book is very casual and doesn't overwhelm you with facts and information that you'll helplessly reread a thousand times before understanding what the author is talking about. The downside to that is students who are already well versed in anthropology and its subdisciplines may feel the book is oversimplified and contains a lot of fluff. Books with a lot of fluff do not belong in a reference book collection, but they're a great introduction to the field. Just a word of caution, some of the information in this book is simplified to the point where it's bordering on incorrect. For instance, it has a picture of the human skeleton and shows what ages epiphyses fuse with the diaphyses to estimate age, however, it gives a single number instead of a range, and fails to specify whether the skeleton is male or female. An age range (which can be population specific) accounts for individual variation and ages of fusion vary by sex as well. However, as I said, this is to be somewhat expected because this book is a simplified INTRODUCTION to anthropology with a focus on archaeology and prehistory.

I gave it 4/5 stars given its intended use.

Another home run for Feder.

Great book for the novice archaeologist or if you're just interested in easy to ready and understand Human Pre-History. This is the second book I've read by Ken Feder and have found his writings very easy and smooth ready. He has a great sense of humor and incorporates it throughout. As I read his works I regret not having applied myself more, in my early years, and considered archaeology as a career or hobby, I might have it I'd read him sooner. Feder makes archaeology and human pre-hisory so interesting. You can't go wrong getting your hands on any of his books.

About the Author

Carlos Fuentes (1928-2012) was one of the most influential and celebrated voices in Latin American literature. He was the author of 24 novels, including Aura, The Death of Artemio Cruz, The Old Gringo and Terra Nostra, and also wrote numerous plays, short stories, and essays. He received the 1987 Cervantes Prize, the Spanish-speaking world's highest literary honor.

Fuentes was born in Panama City, the son of Mexican parents, and moved to Mexico as a teenager. He served as an ambassador to England and France, and taught at universities including Harvard, Princeton, Brown and Columbia. He died in Mexico City in 2012.

Terrible.

The book is awful and boring. You spend the first 30 pages reading about generations of family that die and aren't important to the rest of the story.

The main character, Jaime, is a conflicted rich Spanish kid who is totally self-absorbed and masturbates in front of a statue of Jesus on the cross in church, runs out to the desert to flagellate himself, sleeps with a prostitute, and then kills his own cat for no reason by smashing in its head with a rock and then suffocating it.

Jaime's big dilemma is how to grow up to not become a callous hypocrite like those around him. By the end of the book his decision is to embrace being a callous hypocrite and to write-off those in the world who truly suffer as deserving it and being hopeless cases who he shouldn't care about.

I'm really glad this book wasn't that lengthy because it was a waste of time. If it wasn't required reading for my class I wouldn't have ever gotten through it.

coming of age in Guanajuato

The Good Conscience is about a young man who grows up in Guanajuato, Mexico. He is raised by his uncle and aunt, who are unable to have children of their own. His uncle is a wealthy but very selfish man, who loves only himself and his high social standing. The boy is encouraged to conform in every way to the family's expectations. The uncle, aunt, and others insist that the boy be religious, but when he takes a strong interest in Christlike behavior, his uncle admonishes him. When the main character becomes friends with a poor, dark-skinned boy, his uncle and aunt criticise him for hanging out with people of no standing. As the young man's childhood is coming to an end, his Indian friend moves away to seek work. Then the boy must decide for himself whether he is to be like the hypocritical adults, or live his life with integrity.

Hi, I’m Alyssa, and not long ago, I became tired of being fat.

Searching online for “before and after” pictures to inspire me, I found the tumblr thinspo community. There I started my own blog, sweetthinspiration.tumblr.com, and started talking about my struggles and successes in the weight loss war.

Before long, messages started coming in from people to whom weight loss suddenly made sense, from people relieved they no longer needed to starve and purge, and from people who just needed an extra dose of inspiration to keep going. When a huge number of the people writing those messages used words like “finally,” “changed my life,” and “saved me,” I realized that mine wasn’t just another blog. When people started telling me things like that they had printed out my writings to keep copies with them throughout the day, or that they wanted to wallpaper their room with pages of them, and that I should write a book, I started to wonder if maybe this was meant to be more than just about me.

The Real You is Skinny is my way of saying thank you to everyone who inspired me to lose the weight and who helped me meet the real me.

It is also, I hope, just what you have been looking for.

After reading a million diet books, this one is the beacon of light!

I can say with absolute certainty that this book changed my life, It's something I'm going to keep forever, and reread over and over again for motivation and a voice of reason and sanity in a country of excess that's gone nuts, telling people whatever they want to hear just to sell a book or program or magazine. "Eat all the ______ you want and lose weight!" Almost every book put out in the last ten years has the tagline "Lose weight without counting calories!" I have read hundreds of these books and articles, and in the last few years after putting on excess weight, I've tried a bunch of them...among them Paleo, Sugar-Free, Blood Type (lots of meat), Eat-To-Live (no meat), even (regretfully) Intermittent Fasting. I was trying to avoid paying to join Weight Watchers (which is basically a calorie counting program, just disguised as "points", and ironically the top-ranking program that actually works), but the one time in my adult life when I got beautifully and perfectly skinny and fit and maintained it for a few years was with Weight Watchers and regular exercise. What spoke to me so deeply about Alyssa's book was not only hers being a real story of transformation, but it REMINDED me of MY OWN transformation, many years back on Weight Watchers. It is EXACTLY the mental process I went through to be thin and maintain thin, where I also was able to maintain freedom of choice and total confidence, just like Alyssa. Through all this diet-book noise and my own desperation, I had totally forgotten what is was like to actually DO IT and with GREAT SUCCESS. Now, thanks to Alyssa, I remember vividly and know now how to use my own strength to get back there! NO MORE wacky diets or theories!! They just don't work in the real world!! Maybe if you were single, without kids, stayed at home, and had no friends and relatives, in a perfect vacuum you could maintain a prescribed "Sugar-Free" or "All Plant Life" diet. But Alyssa's method- relying on YOURSELF to make the proper decisions about what and when to eat, no matter where, when, with who, with whatever kind of food availability or situation you find yourself in, is truly the only one that works long term, just as it did with me in the past! ( I lost my equilibrium with a new husband, new job, new baby etc. , but now I'm ECSTATIC to get it back.)
I'd like to say "Kudos!" to Alyssa for being brave enough to tell her story, amid all the controversy in our country about weight loss and body love. We have reached a whole new level of hypocrisy in our culture at the moment, and the witch hunt is on for anybody that tells people that being overweight is their own fault and they are the only ones to have any power to change it, We as a culture have been babied ( or "sold") into the idea that it's not our fault if we are overweight- there are a million other places to place blame, from pesticides to ad agencies to even the government. We've also been sold the idea that's its not fair that we can't eat whatever we want and still be healthy and beautiful- it's just not fair! Hence, all the programs out there telling you to eat all you want and still lose weight without counting calories!!! Which, commonsense tells us, if that were all true, our obesity problem would be pretty much solved. But it isn't, so what does that tell us? Alyssa hit the nail on the head with her revelation, and mine too, from when I was skinny, that- skinny is HARD. It's HARD WORK. Which is a WICKEDLY unpopular, if not downright offensive, statement in our culture right now.
Even in Denise Austin's last book I read, Side Effect-Skinny, I noticed that Denise's usually positive, encouraging voice sounded almost exasperated when writing- (Yes, it's about the CALORIES! It's about PORTION CONTROL! It's about NUTRITION!) Even Denise sounded annoyed when writing, trying to explain to people that no, you cannot do whatever you want and have a fit and healthy body! Commonsense is disappearing rapidly amid all our commercialism. To anybody who thinks Alyssa is promoting disordered eating, they did not read the book. She makes clear the distinctions of calorie counting and eating disorders, and emphasizes throughout the book the importance of nutrition. Anyone who missed those points has been sold the idea of "We should be able to eat however we want to and still be healthy!" When I was at my skinniest, I consumed way more nutrients from whole foods in a 1200 calorie day than any of my coworkers did, downing 2000++ calories of processed junk and take out/fast food. Do a full medical workup on us, and the ones eating the American way of "However I want" will have way worse health scores than those who are responsibly eating highly nutritious food within a safe calorie count. This book DOES NOT PROMOTE EATING DISORDERS.
Also-I really enjoyed Alyssa's writing style and the layout of the book-she flip-flops between personal journal entries and chapters of info, it made the book completely engaging and fun to read. I would love to read a sequel- a book on long-term maintenance and dealing with life changes? That's where I ( and I suspect a lot of women) have struggled. It would be really helpful!
I have never left a review this long- but after reading a million other diet books, I just wanted to give high remarks for a well written and enlightening book and come to the author's defense!

A True Journey

There are so many challenges that come with losing weight- during and after even the weight is gone. Weight loss requires discipline and mental well-being- Alyssa's emotional journey as well as her methods are all beneficial to me as I continue to lose weight. But what's MOST amazing is how her methods worked for me. The weight just started dropping off when I started listening to her. I lost about 10 pounds since I read this a month ago! :) I used to listen to what all the personal trainers said- I mean, they were the ones I thought knew everything. But little did I know they were wrong! For about 6 months, I was working out everyday for an hour and a half and eating everything they told me, aimed for 65g protein, yadda yadda yadda... but my weight wasn't going down much. And I wasn't looking that different. I even thought I needed to do two hours a day. And then BAM! Listened to Alyssa and I even cut back on exercising a lot (still did though, more like an hour every other day), and I still lost more weight than ever beforehand. I"M SO GLAD I read it! So I just want to say THANK YOU to Alyssa for that. With this book, I also FINALLY have the knowledge of knowing I can be thin for the rest of my life! I never thought I would ever say that. I can be thin forever. Because her combination of intuitive/disciplined eating and exercise just works.

People told me when I was at my heaviest, about 15 pounds heavier, You're fat, they would say. Or you're big boned. Or it's genetic. And they would judge me and give me looks. But definitely made me feel like there was nothing I can do about it. When I lost weight and was at my happiest weight, thin and very toned, and healthy! The same people- they went beserk. You're too thin! You look gross! You're awful! Look at you, eating only vegetables! Are you crazy!? Meanwhile, it was the only time I was just at a completely normal weight. I looked totally fine. I realize that NOW- two years later, when I look back at pictures. But then, they had made me feel like something was wrong with me. They made me feel worse than when I was fat! They made me feel BAD about my weight loss because it intimidated them, and I let their negativity affect me. She addresses these issues in her book amongst many more! (Another thing: I also realized I was using similar methods to what Alyssa did when I was maintaining that size.)

What I noticed: how Alyssa loses weight is how most celebrities (But don't admit it) and many people lose weight and keep it off. Its a lifestyle change! And she also explains her reasoning for all her choices in method, busts many myths, and the whole nature of becoming a skinny person- in way you can maintain forever. Just read it. It all makes sense. It's so simple. Not that it won't be a challenge. But really- it's a simple method.

Seeing the real me come out from underneath the unnecessary pounds has been amazing.

A story of weight loss, not a template

After being a longtime follower of "sweetthinspiration" on Tumblr, I thought I'd read the book for myself to see where all of the "pro-ana" critiques were coming from. From the very beginning, the author makes it clear that she is not a registered dietitian, doctor, personal trainer, or any variation of the above; she is simply a young woman who became tired of feeling "fat," and decided to make a change in her life. The book is a narrative; not a diet plan or a template for weight loss. It chronicles the struggles people in all weight categories face-- i.e., prejudices for being too skinny or overweight, the difficulty of staying motivated, the perils of being "social" without completely losing sight of an end goal--and offers the story of how one individual learned to cope with and overcome these triggers we all face.

Although I don't necessarily agree with some of her methods,I appreciate that the author depicted her personal struggle of weight loss, and that it is HARD work and can't be attained through gimmicks, special foods or weight loss supplements. If you are looking for a book that gives you a complete "guide to skinny," this is probably not for you. However, if you are looking for a success story, tips on how to overcome societal pressures, an honest look into the difficulty of losing weight, or anecdotes on the euphoric feeling that results from accomplishing(previously unattainable) goals throughout the weight loss process, then look no further.

PERFORMING ARCHITECTURE, a book compiled by Michael Hammond, an expert on architecture and urban design, brings a tour of some of the more interesting and accomplished works of architectural art conceived and built for the performing arts. The buildings he highlights have all the grandeur of cathedrals - structures of the elevation of the spirit and soul as well as edifices that stand alone as architectural wonders of design and function. Not only are there many photographs of both the exteriors and interiors of these buildings, but Hammond also includes the initial and subsequent drawings by the designers of these wonders, computer renderings and commentary about the concept and construction history of these landmark buildings.

Hammond profiles some 50-odd projects from the Shanghai Grand Theatre designed by Arte Jean-Marie Charpentier, to London's Music Box, designed by Foreign Office Architects and the Unicorn Theater for Children, the Tenerife Opera House in the Canary Islands and the Palau de les arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, Spain, The Grand Canal Square Theater in Dublin, Ireland, the Danish Radio Concert Hall in Copenhagen, Lincoln Center in New York, The Guangzhou Opera House and the Beijing Opera House in China, the Oppenheim Miami Dade College Campus Center in Florida, the Oslo Opera House in Oslo, Norway, the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center in Troy, New York and of course, Frank Gehry's splendid Walt Disney Concert Hall for the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Los Angeles, California.

The author carefully points out that the 'first' distinguished contemporary building for the arts was the 1973 Sydney Opera House, Australia, and icon image of the arts: since its construction architects and designers have become more alert o the need for the changes in acoustical engineering and the recognition that many of the old buildings for the performing arts were not only aging physically but also not compatible with the new concepts in how opera, dance, and theater could be enhanced by contemporary buildings design specifically for the arts. This is a grand book and one that will appeal to those who study architecture, those who are committed to the performing arts and long for the secret places of these great monuments to be more accessible, and to those fascinated by urban design in the 21st century. All the new halls and cultural spaces intended for public performance. Text is informal but pictures talk for themselves. This is not a technical text but rather an artistical aproach to expose the beauty of a very specialized field .
