Bill Christman had always been an affectionate and confident child, but when he entered first grade he began to be plagued with anxieties and fears. From the moment he awoke, his mind was filled with a single thought: Something bad is going to happen. Over time, he found release in rage and became a serious behavioral problem. By high school, he was getting drunk, fighting all the time, in trouble with the law and, eventually, homeless. He began to seriously consider ending his life. In despair, Bill begged God for help. He began attending Alcoholics Anonymous, became sober and got his life on track, but the feeling that he was somehow defective remained. It wasn't until 2002 that Bill began to understand the source of his shame and fear. When Bill's father died when he was six, a Catholic priest had offered to be a father figure for him and his older brother. Now, memories long repressed of how that priest had sexually abused him began to come to the surface. Forgiving the Catholic Church tells the account of Bill's incredible journey. It is a story not only of the tragic effects of his abuse but also how he was able to overcome his circumstances and, with the help of others, forgive the priest who had abused him. It is also a story of how God reached into his life at his lowest points and lifted him up-just as He does with each of us today.

Powerful, Honest, Touching, and True

FIRST, check out his web-site [...] I found an awesome video and outlay of the author himself and how his story was created...
I was hesitant to read this book as it generated a level of fear and uncertainty for me. However, I was intrigued and curious and I began to read. I was captured in the first 2 chapters and I finished it in 3 days. This is a book that needs to be shared, spoke about, and used as an example of turning tragedy into triumph.
Bill Christman, the author did a remarkable job pulling the reader in. He was honest, upbeat, and real through the entire book. There was no bashing of the Catholic Faith or graphic content to be found. This book is wrote in a literary format appropriate for all age levels. The format is intriguing and enticed me not to put the book down. His writing is very creative and relative to many aspects of one's life, making the reader want to find out what will happen next. I had questions all the way through the book and how he brought it all to a close at the end is beautiful...you have to read it!!!
I divulge in reading true stories, autobiographies, and bibliographies; the stories that capture my attention are the books that when I read them, I almost feel the author is sitting next to me, telling their story; I felt that with Forgiving The Catholic Church by Bill Christman. He is personal from page one and is detailed in his emotion, pain, struggles, and success which is ultimately forgiveness.
I am able to take the lessons and the solutions Bill shares in his story and use them in my life today. I am grateful I was given this book to read and I am honored to rate it at a 5 and encourage you to read it, too. It is worth your time and please share it with others.

Revealing and Honest. Amazing details. Inspiring and "Annointed"

I discovered this book while attending a recent Christian Retailers conference. This was an overtly "Evangelical" environment and, being one of only a few Catholics at the event, the title of this book caught my attention.
I finished the book using all of my little free time over the last 3 days - I simply could not stop. Very well organized, sharing just enough personal information through the first half to inspire my own personal thoughts, judgements (about the Church and I am embarrassed to say - sometimes about the victims) and imaginings regarding the entire sex scandal.
About half way through the author "lifted the veil" or maybe a better way to put it "the cone of silence" revealing an amazing amount of detail from encounters with his abuser to informal and formal/legal meetings and correspondences with local and global church officials and their legal team sharing depositions and more than I should share with hopes this review will lead some to read this important book.
We often judge an entire organization based on the actions of a few (or - amazingly and sadly - the actions of MANY with regards to the sex scandal). What I found most inspiring was what brought about the author's healing and how I felt healed at the end regarding several non-related events in my own life (I am not a victim of sexual abuse from the Church or anyone else). The book seems in some ways "annointed" and truly should be shared with all in the Church.
I believe every priest and cleric should read this book. First to learn from the mistakes of many in the treatment of the victims and the dealings of the pedophiles (or anyone hurt). Second, and most importantly, to learn how to truly be a great priest or cleric as the author not only gives an amazingly detailed account of the failures of many but the true honesty and love (and bravery) of some great priests.
I wondered how the church could survive after such a scandal. I now see why. Thank you for this book.

Heartbreaking with an incredible ending

Incredible ending to what could have been a truly tragic story. It was heartbreaking to read about the abuse, the way it affected Bill, and the way the church and it's representatives initially responded to him. Thank God that it didn't end that way, for Bill and for the Catholic church. I hope his story inspires other victims to consider forgiving the church as well.
