About the Author
JONATHAN L. HAINES is Director of the Program in Human Genetics, Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. His research into the localization and identification of genes involved in human disease includes studying Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, autism, macular degeneration, and other complex diseases.

MARGARET A. PERICAK-VANCE is Director of the Center for Human Genetics and Chief of the Section of Medical Genetics in the Department of Medicine, Duke University School of Medicine. She is a founding Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics. Her research interests include the integration of genomic and statistical technologies and their application to diseases of importance to public health, with an emphasis on neurologic diseases.

With a title inspired as much by Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker series as Einstein, The Theory of Everything delivers almost as much as it promises. Transcribed from Stephen Hawking's Cambridge Lectures, the slim volume may not present a single theory unifying gravity with the other fundamental forces, but it does carefully explain the state of late 20th-century physics with the great scientist's characteristic humility and charm. Explicitly shunning math, Hawking explains the fruits of 100 years of heavy thinking with metaphors that are simple but never condescending--he compares the settling of the newborn universe into symmetry to the formation of ice crystals in a glass of water, for example. While he explores his own work (especially when speaking about black holes), he also discusses the important milestones achieved by others like Richard Feynman. Though occasionally an impenetrably obscure phrase does slip by, the reader will find the bulk of the text enlightening and engaging. The material, from the nature of time to the possibility that the universe has no beginning or end, is rich and deep and inevitably ignites metaphysical thinking. After all, Hawking is famous for his "we would know the mind of God" remark, which ends the final lecture herein. --Rob Lightner

In this book Stephen Hawkings relates to what the subtitle says: "The Origin and the Fate of the Universre" from seven of his letures on his theories and beliefs of his cosomology. Mr/Dr. Hawkings does a tremendous job in explaining the history of astronomy with his seven lectures which include..." Ideas (history) About the Universe,The Expanding Universe, Black Holes, Black Holes Ain't So Black, The Origin and Fate of the Universe, The Direction of Time, and The Theory of Everything." Mr. Hawkings explains these very complex theoris in everyday layman's language to his readers.He uses real life and portended examples to explain his theories.He makes these very complex theories understandable to the layman. He writes with enthusiam without challenging anyones' theories or faith. His style of writing in not self-centered nor is it arrogant like so many scientists do. His style is invitiing, exciting, and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend this book,"The Special Anniversary Edition," to all and everybody, especially the amateur astronomy buffs and the every day layman.

NO UNIFIED THEORY AND STILL COUNTING

It's remarkable the optimism for a unified theory in 1996
Regardless, a very useful discussion about what we have learned about the Universe and some of the implications that may be issues for future inquiry. The idea of combining quantum and relativity theories is creative and seemingly useful, but doesn't get it done so far. And, certainly didn't before the 21st century.
Physics IS evidently is the new phlosophy. The author does a credible job of asking relevant questions. The book should be in everyone's library of experience, so useful discussion and learning may become us.

C.M. Shifflett is the author of Ki in Aikido: A Sampler of Ki Exercises and other works on Aikido and martial arts. A student of the late George Simcox and other teachers of the Virginia Ki Society, she has studied Aikido for over 20 years. She lives in Pennsylvania.

Marvelous, beautiful primer.

Most books on aikido suffer from some common flaws. They usually have a whole lot of small blurry photographs of techniques and a set of platitudes, with no way to relate them to either aikido practice or real life. This book has neither of those flaws.
As a beginner in ki-aikido, now forced to be in a town without a ki society dojo, I use Ki in Aikido as a regular reference to when I want to practice the ki exercises, which are clearly and comprehensively explained.
More importantly, she discusses the positive outlook necessary for success in aikido and in life. In a sense, it's both a primer on ki exercises and a self-help book for maintaining a "plus" attitude in life.
Also extremely witty and enjoyable to read. If nothing else, get it for the beautiful drawings of real live aikido practitioners.
The only danger with this book is that you may love it and become an evangelist and enthusiastically loan it to a friend, who will love it and never give it back. That would be bad.

An outstanding guide to Ki development

The concepts of "Ki" as taught in Ki Society Aikido schools is not easy for westerners to comprehend. I first started practicing it in 1990. Since then, outside of the writings of the founder, Koichi Tohei Sensei, I have not found a readily available and readable book that expliains Ki to westerners. Then came "Ki in Aikido: A Sampler of Ki Exercises" by C. M. Shifflett. In this easily manageable (size wise) book, Ms Shifflett gives a breif discription of Aikido and Ki then gets into the "meat of the matter". She explains Ki very clearly and gives lots of examples of how to incorporate it into your Aikido and your life. The art work is excellent and very aptly displays what is discribed. For my money, there is no better book for anyone: from the seasoned high ranking instructor to the novice to the curious onlooker. Anyone can get something from this book.

The Force is strong with this one

I earned my shodan during three years training in Japan (my instructors were wonderful people), and have taught for three years also (receiving permission from World Aikido headquarters).

This is an excellent little book. It is pleasant both to look at and read, and covers a lot of information in a well-paced and thoughtful manner. The elegant presentation reminds me of books on Japanese flower arrranging.

It is also concise, delivering not only what I understand to be a near-complete rendition of the various ki techniques and their applications in a straightforward manner, but also including brief notes on the various influences of aikido on cinema (The Seven Samurai, Star Wars), apocryphal tales about the founder Ueshiba Morihei, etc.

I enjoyed reading this book and consider it, unlike several other books on the subject, both well worth the expense and a useful addition to one's aikido library.
