Good for referencing but a terrible book to learn from.

This text presents a unified approach to microcontinuum field theories. However it is extremely difficult to read, unless you already understand the material. Theorems are presented one after another with very little context and their significance or application is not discussed at all. The notation employed is cryptic and difficult to follow. In his attempt to present a unified approach to micro-polar, micro-stretch and micro-morphic theories, the author loses focus. My goal in reading this book was to learn about micro-polar theory, the simplest and most popular of the three. In his search to present a unified theory of all three the author requires the reader to learn the most complicated cases in order to understand even the simplest theory.
As a graduate student working in solid mechanics with a background in elasticity, I feel like I should be the target audience for this book.

Now that I have learned much of the material from other sources, I still use this book as a reference or as a canonical source.

This is the first of a two-volume book, see Microcontinuum Field Theories II Fluent Media, devoted to the exposition of field theories for bodies which possess inner structure, or microstructure, that can interact with mechanical and electromagnetic fields. The purpose here is a thorough and precise presentation of exact continuum theories on materially nonuniform or nonsimple bodies (bodies composed of single, dipolar, and deformable elements) that can respond to short-and long-range interparticle fields. Although most of these theories have acquired their present definitive forms during the last three decades or so, there exist no published textbooks and treatise on the subjects covered in this two-volume book, except some partial expositions and limited review scattered in the literature.
I believe that in this book, A. C. Eringen presents a unified approach, which includes improvements, additions, and/or completions of various aspects of these theories, published in a large number of his own papers.
It is a valuable book for graduate study and research in applied mathemtics and continuum physics, and the perfect companion of Nonlocal Continuum Field Theories.

Why doesn't the movie look as inspired as the book?!

This book should be absolutely a must for art students, directors (especially art directors), illustrators, designers, fantasy and science fiction readers, writers (current and future) and visualists of all genres and mediums.While the movie looks pretty good these ideas in sketches and designs and character studies-as well as full production scenes-are more inspired and potentially more appealing than the film ('potentially' because most artists and art students will get this more than most people who just watch the movies).Some of the technical work while well designed is a bit flat. Even that is a small nitpick. This book is a well researched view into the behind the scenes ideas that make the visual essence of the film. I don't think a person even needs to like the Star Wars stories to enjoy this book on a visual level.This hardback edition is a beautiful addition to unique coffee table books. It's a blast to browse through all these artists' heads as the ideas of forms, lines and color spill out onto the paper, boards, canvas and digital screens.The compositions contained within these pages are wonderfully inspired, strange and mythic.

Great read! Check it out!

I have to say that Im totally enjoying this book. Im not even a big sports fan and I dont think you really need to be one to enjoy this. Its just super interesting reading about all the,drugs, greed, booze, and gambling (and the cover ups by the leagues, owners, coaches and players: WOW!!) that plays a HUGE roll in pro and college sports. Im about half way done and I dont want it to end. I just love reading about these so-called "role models" hanging around with gangsters, getting wasted, getting high, and gambling themselves so deep, that they have to throw games to get out! This book helps me justify my own feelings about most sports (especially football) being fake and or rigged by players, owners or even umpires.
....and I havent even got to the Pete Rose section yet!!!!

GET THIS BOOK!!! HIGHLY ENTERTAINING AND HIGHLY RECOMENDED!

If you prefer your favorite sports to read like fairy tales - dont read this book.

If you are able to separate yourself from speaking or thinking about your favorite sport team in the collective "we" then you will love Brian Tuohy's "The Fix is in". The book has been tabbed as a "conspiracy theory" book - but I would argue that the book in fact is NOT a conspiracy theory book as those books usually just throw out wild accusations with no basis or foundation to begin to even build a question or theory on. The Fix is In - is rather a suggestion and challenge to the general public and "die hard" sports fan to consider certain truths both documented and notably alleged. If you approach the book as a research document you will find much more supporting evidence of very "shady" transactions or occurrences that have gone widely ignored or unknown. Even the lack of coverage of such transactions / transgressions is a very interesting topic covered in the book. I think Tuohy opens the door to some very provocative and potentially very damning questions... and I say its about time

Changed the way I think about sports

Let me start that I am not much into conspiracy theories. However, after reading Brian Tuohy's excellent The Fix Is In, I am not so sure. Tuohy's makes the case that professional sports are too big and make too much money to be left to chance. Sports are just are version of "Bread and Circuses" from Roman times. Ratings are hugely important because that drives revenue. The NBA is probably the biggest culprit. Ever wonder why the Lakers and Celtics (now the Heat) are always in the finals? They get better ratings because they have the "superstars". Wonder why Michael Jordan never got fouls called on him? Wonder why the Knicks won the lottery for Patrick Ewing? Walker's version of the Tao Te Ching is by far the most beautiful and has (at least, for me) the clearest and deepest meaning. This is the the book that has taught me the most about the tao; this is the translation from which I read to my son. I hope you read it.

The Best Translation Of The Tao Te Ching To Read While Enduring A Life Crisis

This may sound like a silly or a comical name for a review of a book that I consider to be the best translation of the TTC to read while going through the dark times in one's life.

But I found Brian Browne Walker's translation of the Tao te Ching while going through a really bad divorce, multiple surgeries, and an all around crappy time in my life.

And it spoke to me, as if ole Laozi was there beside me, reading it to me himself.

While I study Red Pine's translation of the TTC much of the time now, I have a really special place in my heart for Mr. Walker's translation.

It's written by a man who KNOWS disaster, and devastation, and a man who has also walked through it all to the other side, and out of the shadows, and into the light of a life, well lived.

Walker translates the Tao te Ching with PASSION, and as other reviewers also mention, with clarity.

If you are going through a hard time in your own life, I encourage you to buy a copy of Brian Browne Walker's translation of the TTC, and let it speak to YOU, just as it did, and STILL DOES, to ME.

I have read many different translations of Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching. Mr. Walker's translation opens up to the reader a whole new realm of Tao philosophy with beautiful, insiteful words which more perfectly capture the essence of Lao Tzu's thoughts and philosophy. Lao Tzu was one of the greatest philosophers and sages of our planet, and Mr. Brian Walker is the individual alive today who is most in tune with the ancient bodisatva's thoughts. This book is well worth the money as it comforts an individual in any possible situation. The wisdom of the Tao is eternal, and this translation of the Tao Te Ching captures its essence better than any other translation I have come across

Grade 3-6 It's another outing for the companions of Bunnicula (Atheneum, 1979) the (supposedly) vampire rabbit. This time, they are on a camping trip with the Monroes, their cheerfully oblivious owners. Chester suspects danger from the outset, and his worst suspicions are confirmed when the Monroes set up camp near Bud, Spud, and their dog, Dawg, a sinister threesome right out of Deliverance. When Dawg leads Howie, Harold, and Chester on a chase deep into the surrounding forest and they become lost, Chester tells them a scary story to lull Dawg to sleep so that they can escape to rescue the Monroes who, they are sure, are in mortal danger. The story, of course, turns out to be about Bunnicula, Chester's favorite subject, and his origins, which turn out to be similar to the plot of any standard vampire movie and which, curiously, seem to involve Bud and Spud. Dawg brings about logical explanations which convince even Chester until he learns about Pete's secret merit badge project: breeding Bunnicula. . . . This fourth story in the series is the weakest, relying too much on readers' familiarity with vampire movie cliches and tolerance for weak puns. The journey into Bunnicula's roots is labored at best. The central conceit of this is done wittily but is getting threadbare. Is Chester right or merely hysterical? Readers would like to know. Christine Behrmann, New York Public Library

Chester Strikes Again

On a family camping trip Chester and Harold get separated from their family and having a HOWLING night-time adventure complete with Chester's bedtime story. And as usual Chester imagination gets the best of him. You also find that the old saying "You can't judge a book by its cover" is true. James Howe delivers another great mystery.

Good story within a story

It starts out as a family outing and ends up as a horror story! But most of all, I liked the story within a story which was the story of Bunnicula's parents-Bella and Boris. Boris and Bella are the results of an experiment done by a scientist who is immortal. "Nighty Nightmare" is definitely one of James Howe's better stories. I also liked "Bunnicula A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery" and "Howliday Inn".
