Shocking, beautiful, brilliant and yet, incredibly moving story!
I just had to soar through, every jaw dropping twist and turn! As if there were, miles and miles of truth and despair to consume. As if the words were just thrown at me! Hitting full force! Like a mack truck that lost its bearing.
Leading me on a breathtaking journey of Mrs. Winters filmatic writing.
Wrapping you up like a cloak of lyrical magic and leaving you mystified.

Eye rolls galore...sorry

My 2 star rating basically boils down to this story not being my cup of tea.

The author's ability to tell the story was flawless, and the concept of the story was good. There were several side characters and plot lines that could have been explored to give it more interest and depth, but there were just too many things about the story I disliked and couldn't relate to, that I'm sorry I chose this as my first Pepper Winters read.

The female character was too young to make her role believable, and the male character, while several years older started out strong and confident and then morphed into a teenage boy (sad) and the angst factor was over the top...and just when you thought the story was finally coming to conclusion the author gave me one more reason to groan and do an eye roll. Finally, I thought the story could have been told in one standalone novel.

I'll give Ms Winters another try, I understand some of her other books may be more to my liking.

Not My Favorite, But Still Great!

If you enjoyed 'Crown of Lies', then you don't want to miss the conclusion to Penn and Elle's story. Finally, all of the lingering questions I had have been answered. With plenty of twists and turns along the way, the facts and the past are unveiled. Some things were predictable, others not so much.

Picking up where 'Crown of Lies' left off, 'Throne of Truth' thrusts readers right back into the dangerous situation that Elle has found herself in. If I thought that I hated Greg before, I had no idea of how much I would come to despise him. Totally unhinged, with a penchant for the sadistic, he proves to be far worse than I had imagined.

With Elle missing and at the mercy of her abductor, Penn is determined to rescue her. Whether or not Elle wants anything to do with him once he finds her, is something he's willing to let her decide once she's heard him out. He's come too far to let her slip away without hearing his truth.

Elle ends up spending more time than I had anticipated as Greg's captive. Accordingly, this book had a "darker" feel to it than the first book did. He was one crazy guy and he had no qualms about mistreating Elle.

Eventually, Penn does come to Elle's rescue. No big surprise there! However, the two still have their own problems to work out.

Despite the big heroic rescue, Elle still isn't willing to trust Penn. Given the situation, the bickering seemed a little petty and unrealistic to me. I mean, come on! You've just been rescued from your kidnapper/would-be rapist and you're going to refuse to talk to your savior? I call BS.

Once the two finally get things squared away again, it doesn't take much time before they run into another problem. Elle's company comes under fire for her association with Penn. After all that work to get her back, Penn begins to question whether or not he is good enough for Elle.

They're off. They're on. They're off. They're on again. There is certainly plenty of angst and conflict in this second book. I am a lover of angst, but it was getting to feel a bit too contrived for me.

That being said, I did enjoy this book quite a bit overall. I had plenty of gripes - like the friendship with Gio- but I have to admit that I couldn't put it down or pull myself away from all of the drama. Sure, I rolled my eyes...but I couldn't get enough.

I haven't found a Pepper Winters book yet that I haven't enjoyed. This one proved to be no different. I have enjoyed every minute of Elle and Penn's story, albeit unbelievable at times. I also loved having a story that came full circle in only two books, versus a series that goes on and on without an end in sight. This wasn't my favorite of Ms. Winters' series, but I thought it was great all the same!

Well presented and full of facts.

The book is large and full of portraits from diferent sites in Egypt, not only the Fayum, which are not always included in other books. It contains several articles from diferent specialists conserning the history, techniques, archaeological facts and findings as well as the dating of these objects, which are very usefull and enlightening. Three fourth's of the book presents the portraits themselves and the study cases of each one of them. Unfortunetly, the portraits are not always full length page and all are placed on a white background. In this respect, the book by Berenice Geoffory-Schneiter, Fayum, is superior. Nevertheless, the book is nicely presented and a good basic book for those interest in the study of this fascinating cultural expression.

From Trauma to Wholeness

Dennis McCarthy's beautifully written book, "If You Turned into a Monster," might seem directed towards professional therapists, but its truths are universal. The wisdom of Mr. McCarthy, his gentle empathy, his reflections on myth, psychoanalysis, Bioenergetics, and his own struggles with childhood grief, will enlighten every reader. In jargon-free language, it explores the inner world of children in crisis, and reveals their incredible capacity not only to survive traumas, but -- with the help of an insightful and caring therapist like Mr. McCarthy -- to regain wholeness, reshaping their inner lives as they draw pictures, tell stories, and build up, break down, and remake their sand creations.

We learn the specific cases of children in often drastic situations -- a deadly illness, a parent with AIDS, abuse -- and yet the astonishing feeling from reading this book is of immense hopefulness. Mr. McCarthy sees every child on her/his own terms, and uses play therapy, particularly sandplay, to break free of the inner conflicts that prevent personal growth. As he writes, "Using a symptom playfully and creatively is using what the child is bringing with them as raw material for change.... They can be the very impetus for transformation (and) can become doorways." (pgs. 112-113) The fears of children are the fears we all face, and without polemics or accusations, he shows the need for parents to understand themselves in order to better help their child's development. "In letting children begin to teach us about childhood we can them begin to consider how to better parent and teach the child." (pg. 139)

Mr. McCarthy expresses himself with a sense of joy, hope, gratitude, and awe, especially when experiencing the charged, numinous moments when a child begins to unlock the "monster" inside, and the pictures of "monsters" drawn by these children are wonderfully vivid and revealing. The lives of the children are the heart of this book. Mr. McCarthy does not pretend to know all the answers. His openheartedness towards children, and their often confused and troubled parents, seems a key to his success not only as a therapist, but as a writer as well.

A book of this nature might not appear to be a "page-turner," but once you begin, you will not want to stop. It is thoughtful, funny, compassionate, filled with insights, and when you finish it, you will be rewarded with a desire to better understand your own mysteries, your "monsters," your true treasures of the self.

It is so unusual to read a book that chronicles the lives of humans with such universal love, compassion, and wisdom. In this book, Dennis McCarthy details the process of transformation through play in the lives and stories of children and their monsters. The level of specificity balanced by a universal applicability to a wide range of readers makes this book readable for anyone, anywhere. Not only will you dream richer dreams, you will feel a great well of hope rise up when reading about the incredible lives and generative miracles that happen when we listen and pay attention to one another. Dennis McCarthy shows us through a lifetime of case studies what is possible when we dive into the unknown that lives within all of us. Whoever you are, read this book and then go out and replicate the process!

filled with insight and heart

Inner monsters: we all have them, and this brilliant, insightful therapist effects profound transformation in his clients through a willingness to empathize with them and with their inner beasts. The book is a must-read, not only for therapists, but for parents, or for anyone whose monsters were suppressed or misunderstood as children (wouldn't that be most of us?). Fascinating, inspiring, and heart-warming. I recommend it very highly indeed.

GREAT HELP

this book helped me in the class and has a lot of examples and step by step. it also comes with a cheat sheet in the back of the book that way you dont have to keep looking through the chapters for the formula which was a great help and time saver

Simple

This is a very easy to understand textbook. I used it for a course I had previously taken at a different school and found it much easier than my previous textbook. Strangely, the chapters use almost the exact same answers for most of their problems. I suppose it's for simplicity, but it would have been nice to see a better variety. I feel like Chapters 8 and 10 could have been explained a little better though. Some of the answers to the extra problems, shown in the last few pages of the book, are incorrect. I'm not sure if this is a flaw for some books, or if it's a flaw for every book in the 10th edition. My professor verified the answers were incorrect. Otherwise, a good book! I wish I had bought this book instead of renting it, because it's just that helpful.

I have been out of school for over 20 years and could not remember how to do many of the problems, but this book has helped me a great deal. If you are taking some type of math class for the health field, this book is for you.

Grade 2-3-Cosby continues his easy-reader series with this story within a story. Little Bill retells the traditional "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" and relates how he has been banished to his room for making up a "BIG FIB" to cover up his tardiness. Once he confesses and sees himself in the folktale, he realizes that he deserves his parent's anger and punishment. Cosby's comic sense is not clearly in evidence in this didactic story, but he does meet the increasing demand by adults for children's books that illustrate moral issues. The sophistication of this book is found in Honeywood's collage illustrations. The artist's skilled use of flat color creates vibrant pictures that convey drama and emotion that are anything but flat.

Just what I was looking for

I was searching for a way to explain to my child why lying was "a big no-no." I hoped that a Little Bill book would be sure to hold my child's interest. This book was able to do both quite well. The story is interesting without being overly complicated. Both my children enjoyed it and the elder did seem to finally grasp what I'd been unsuccessful in explaining before.

My only complaint would be that I wished Cosby had had Little Bill's parents explain the danger in what he had supposedly been doing that caused him to be late for dinner (his lie), before having Bill come clean. But, it did allow for another important safety topic to be discussed.

Altogether, I'd give the book 4.5 stars.

Shocking!

I cannot believe this is a children's book! I don't think that Bill Cosby's wrongdoings are appropriate material for kids. It's bad enough that Bill Cosby did these horrible things, now he's glorified them in this autobiographical children's book! Disgusting!

On the plus side, I did get a kick out of the illustrations.

Um, this is more of a Little Lie, in the scheme of things.

This book is okay; however, I feel that the title is a bit misleading, as this story only tells of Bill's 'little' lie.
I was disappointed that it never addressed the "Big Lie", as I had hoped to learn some of Bill's "tricks of the trade" in his telling of the story.

The author does a good job of weaving little known yet very important historical facts into an entertaining story line. This should be required reading for every seminary student and ordained minister, Christian, Catholic or Jewish!

Best book I've read in a while...

I recommend this book for honest truth seekers and those who appreciate really good story telling! Dr Brown once again combines truths and fiction to really get the reader thinking, while taking them on a roller coaster ride. The use of characters and their interactions are original and their are some truly shocking facts that most today are unaware of.

If you are not one for being spoon fed, then read this book and follow up on the links given at the end.You won't regret it. ;-)
