Simply Irresistible!!! This book was a breathe of fresh air in a genre that has been filled with books that have been found lacking. I fell in love with the strength of the main character. It was clear at the beginning that this was not going to be just another party girl who shags a billionaire. This tale was so much more. It was inspiring to see Abbie pick herself up and make her own path. I also fell for Lex who was clearly a man that deserved a woman's undivided attention. I loved the first person description of England. It was obvious the writer spent time there because the descriptions were so very realistic. The use of the British slang was hilarious and I wanted to use it myself! I really enjoyed the realism of this book and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a wonderful story. I look forward to reading the next book that will include his brother. Most of all if you have read Nana Malone's previous works you will love this book. Her writing has grown into something wonderful and irresistible.

This book makes me want to go to London.. Be a photographer and meet an Alexi! :)

I have received an Advanced Copy by the author for an honest review. I have read several of this authors novels and I absolutely love her work. This one does not disappoint me! First off, Nana Malone has a writing style that flows throughout her books to make the story move smoothly. There's no point when you are thinking, wait, I am lost, did I miss a page? The events happen and she is descriptive to the point that you feel like you are experiencing the new things with her characters. Her characters are realistic and you fall in love with everyone.
I say this to say that with this novel, you have Abena (Abbie) and Alexi as the main characters and their chemistry is hot like fire! What I love is the fact that Abbie is real, she has goals in life and she truly works to achieve them even when it seemed like no one was on her side. She comes from a family who has a "plan" for her and going to London to pursue further lessons from a world renowned photographer which will help her. So she leaves after an " eye splitting" moment and it made her realize it's time to LIVE. With the help of her best friends from college who live in London, she moves without a look back home. In comes Alexi.. OMG.. The older brother of her photography professor who is hot himself and professes the first day of class that he isn't sleeping with anyone and oh... He makes his students cry at least once.. Yikes.. The other thing is Alexi is a man of wealth and comes from a history that Abbie was not prepared for nor wanted to be apart of while trying to be under the radar.. But they are drawn to each other, one thing leads to another and here you go.. Alexi has secrets of his own but what I loved was that he tried to be honest as much as he could without overwhelming Abbie. Unfortunately, his a hole of a father had other plans.. Not to write a novel reviewing the novel but this is a great read. Looking for a good book where there is an actual story line, a plot that you can follow and some hot love scenes.. this is your book!!!! Well worth the price and I can not wait for the next book!

Love Surpasses All

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. The cover really struck me though. What should be the look of passion or love is instead the blank stare of a woman but yet says so much about her personal wellbeing and still gives off emotions. The blurb allures you to the idea that there’s so much more to the story and as I started reading, I was instantly confronted with the ex-boyfriends betrayals. Yes, not just one but a one, two and out the door he was sent. I instantly felt compassion and sympathy for Abbie and to have a connection like that, so soon, committed me to her throughout the book.

Held back by her parents and boyfriend, for years, always expecting to be what they wanted to mold her to be, Abbie breaks free of them and with courage of a lion she strikes out on her own path in life. How many people have you seen that are just downright unhappy because they followed the dreams they were told to follow? May that be with love, careers, family, etc. Abbie says enough and blows everyone away.

Abbie meets Alexi, aka Lex, and their love story blossoms. Alexi has his fair share of secrets he’s keeping, but I felt that it was made out way more than it needed to be. It wasn’t like he was a secret spy or anything, just business/family ties and some life choices that he was keeping mum about. And that isn’t a spoiler, you learn about certain things from the start of the book. This mixed with the walls that Abbie has put up from her life experiences makes for a whirlwind of push and pull of emotions.

There are some violent moments, sexual situations and adult themes in this book, so I recommend it to readers 18+. For those that like a contemporary romance, cultural variations and a story that makes you think, you will enjoy this book.

Newbery winner Rylant, who debuted as an illustrator with her Everyday board books (1993), offers paintings and text in tribute to "Dog Heaven." Here there are fields to run in, soft beds (made of clouds turned inside out) and "angel children," because "God knows that dogs love children more than anything else in the world." Rylant's childlike acrylic paintings-similar though less practiced than the work of Lucy Cousins-are filled with checkerboard steps, yellow daisies and pink stars. Whether she is aiming for whimsy, albeit self-consciously, or striving to present a genuinely comforting view of heaven is not entirely clear. God, for example, stands like an organ grinder at a biscuit machine, wearing a purple hat and sporting a white mustache. "God has a sense of humor," Rylant tells us, "so He makes His biscuits in funny shapes... kitty-cat biscuits and squirrel biscuits," and "every angel who passes by has a biscuit for a dog" because "every dog becomes a good dog in Dog Heaven." Many will think Rylant's vision appropriately warm and fuzzy; others will consider her on thin ice, psychologically and theologically. Dead animals invisibly return to earth "for a little visit," a development likely to unsettle young mourners; told that dogs in Dog Heaven will be "at the door" when "old friends show up," many children are going to worry about how those old friends got there. Taking a less temporal approach to the subject of death than did Viorst in her homey tale The Tenth Good Thing about Barney (1971), Rylant sweeps beyond the here and now into a brightly colored place she calls Dog Heaven. In this joyfully imagined place, God is a smiling, white-haired gentleman who watches the goings-on as dogs run and bark, play with kids, eat dog biscuits in cat shapes, and sleep on fluffy clouds. It's also a place where dogs patiently wait for old friends: "They will be there at the door. Angel dogs." Rylant's kindergarten concept of the hereafter is cheerful but not humorous or glib. The story seems quietly and deeply rooted in faith, but it is neither sober nor sentimental, and the notion of a higher being is blended naturally into the text in an unpretentious, comforting way. The bright acrylic paintings are Rylant's debut as a picture-book painter; reminiscent of the artwork of very young children, they mesh beautifully with the innocence of the text (which is actually less a story than a series of descriptions), with their vivid rainbow colors turning the sometimes scary mystery of dying into an adventure spent with happy, welcoming four-footed friends. I do recommend this book

This book is part of a tradition of being give to others and my co worker was there when I recieved the news. I recieved this book as a gift after my dog of 14 years had passed away. I didn't read it till after 2 weeks. It did help me cope with the lost and it help elevate that heavy feeling on my chest. A few months later , my coworker's dog passed away and I knew this was the book I wanted to give to her as well. It took her a few weeks to open but it helped ease her heartache. I do recommend this book. Religious or not because it does say "god" and it's about going to heaven and everything that awaits for the dog in heaven. It's still a great book that brings tears and a smile.

GREAT GIFT! Sweet Book!

This is one of my favorite kids' books of all time! I have probably bought over 10 copies of this book. It's a special story of what happens when dogs go to heaven. It has some sweet thoughts about what life is like in heaven for dogs. God has a sense of humor since they get biscuits in the shape of cats and mailmen. And before going to sleep at night, they turn around several times on a cloud to make sure that it all settles just right before they lay down. But it also says that they come back to earth and check on their humans to make sure that everything is ok and they follow their child to school from afar to make sure that everything is alright. If you've had a dog who has recently died, there are some very sweet thoughts in this book that will comfort you. The illustrations are adorable too!
When a friend's dog passes away, I like to give them a copy of this book and write on the inside that this is in memory of their dog who was loved deeply by his family, friends and everyone who met them. Dogs are an important part of the family. They are so much more than just a pet. If you are a dog person too, you will love this book.

About the Author

Mike Williams, Ph.D., �is a shamanic practitioner and teacher trained in soul retrieval, spirit extraction, divination, and assisting the dead and dying. An elected Druid and tutor/mentor for the Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids, Williams studied with indigenous shamanic teachers in Siberia and Lapland and attended teaching sessions with Native American elders. Demystifing the Shamanic World

I have never written a review before but have been prompted to do so after reading Follow the Shaman's Call. I love this book.

Something magical happens just in the reading of it. Mike accompanies you on a variety of journeys, leading you with his gentle wisdom. It is very clear that this man not only knows his stuff but has experienced the shamanic path over time and distance. At the beginning of each chapter there is a little vignette/story which transports you to another world and another time allowing you a firsthand glimpse of the shamanic world - then in the chapter he takes you under his wing as he guides you with practical, down to earth structures for working safely and powerfully in a shamanic way.

This book is a smooth read - it is well written, extensively researched and delightfully executed. I found it all encompassing and grounded in ancient wisdom. I have great respect for Mike, his wisdom, inclusivity, humility and gentle power. Whether you are just dipping your toe into the shamanic world for the first time or are a seasoned traveller this book is an informative, empowering and enjoyable companion.

I can't wait for the next book - which I think is coming out soon !

An eye-opener to a new spiritual path

I had known very little about shamanism prior to reading this book and I chose it for review expressly for the purpose of learning more. I'm glad I did because I think this could be a book that could help me fill a spiritual void I've had for years.

For as long as I can remember I've had an outsider's view of organized religion. My dad's an atheist and my mom's agnostic. When I was 11-ish I was given a choice to go to CCD (both were raised Roman Catholic in Old Vatican practices). Even at that impressionable age, when all of my friends were going to CCD, I said no because even then I knew it would be a waste of my time. I didn't care for "that type" of religion. Of course I was made fun of. I even had a few kids tell me to my face I was going to hell. It didn't bother me even then.

So ever since I've been trying to seek out some kind of spiritual path and I would find aspects of more pagan religions appealing but I never actively considered joining any of them. I wanted something organic, more natural and pre-historic than anything rumbling around currently. For a while it was mixing around those Pagan religions but nothing really called to me. I have my beliefs but they never really fit into anything specific so I've just been going on with my life as is.

Then I picked up this book to read and all of a sudden it clicked. This is it. Williams does an excellent job of describing just what Shamanism is, how to go about practicing it and just what kind of life you'll lead as a shaman. He doesn't pander, he doesn't pull punches. He just tells it like it is and I really liked that. The way he described journeying to the Otherworlds had me wanting to go buy a drumming CD and try it out for myself, despite how afraid it actually makes me.

It's a religion as natural as you can possibly get without the confines of organization or the baggage that comes along with it. There are no stringent requirements, no elevation or shunning of other people. There's just you and nature and that's pretty much it and that's what I like about it.

I plan on using this book as sort of my beginner's guide to shamanism. It's a good tool if you're just starting out and not sure where to step first. It gives you a little bit of information in a lot of areas of shamanism without being overwhelming or confusing. I found it immensely helpful and I plan on making it wholly dog-eared by the time I'm done with it.

If you're interested in delving into a new (well, really old) and natural religion, Follow the Shaman's Call is definitely a good place to start.

Great Addition To Any Shamanic Library!

I loved this book as it combined the historical background of Ancient Shamanic Teachings with the first hand experience of the Author and his contemporaries. There are well explained methods and exercises which are interwoven with lovely anecdotes that bring them alive, making them usable in today's modern society.

The style is informal and knowledgeable without ever patronising the reader and I feel it would be a great introduction for the beginner to gain an overview of Shamanism as well as being a welcome addition to any Shamanic library for the more experienced practitioner.

Despite the heavy subject matter, the overall tone of the book is less somber than the title would indicate, and it is a quick, engaging read. Falkoff nails the war-zone mentality and painful symbiosis of high school friendships. The mixture of grief, anger, and guilt that Sam works through is realistic and well written, and his reactions to Hayden's music choices further illuminates not only his struggle but also how their friendship was beginning to change. The characters and concept work better than the plot—it gets an all-loose-ends-tied-up treatment at the end. This is especially frustrating as an entire eerie subplot is explained away in the course of a short paragraph. The strong characters, dialogue and the use of the playlist to structure the book make this a good pick for struggling readers. A poignant, thought-provoking and incredibly engaging story

Michelle Falkoff’s PLAYLIST FOR THE DEAD is a moving, thought-provoking, and wonderfully told story about a boy who’s trying to come to grips with his best and only friend’s suicide and understand just what his friend was trying to say through the playlist he made for him.

It is a story that tackles a tough subject, but does so in a way that is not too heavy, yet still weighty enough for readers to make an emotional connection with the story and its characters and to give them a number of things to think about.

It introduces a boy who is completely lost, alone, riddled with guilt, and desperate to understand what part he played in his friend’s decision. It follows him in the days and year after the suicide as he tries to interpret the meaning behind each song in the playlist and build a new life for himself.

The author lets both readers and her main character, Sam, try and solve the puzzle together about just what led Hayden to choose to end his life. Through Sam’s memories, the memories of a few others who knew him, and the songs on Hayden’s playlist, readers will get to know Hayden, come to empathize with his struggles, and perhaps understand why he did what he did.

And while this is in part a story about Hayden, it’s very much a story about Sam and everyone that Hayden left behind. PLAYLIST FOR THE DEAD focuses on what happens to those whose lives Hayden impacted, how they cope with the loss, how they adapt, how they survive.

It is sad and sweet and heartfelt and heartbreaking. It asks the question “why,” and it reveals the answer in a way that feels a little bit like a mystery. It gives readers a peek into a friendship that was on the verge of changing, one with secrets, one that had its ups and downs, but one that still had a strong bond. And it invites readers to listen to the songs, which are announced at the beginning of each chapter, in order to feel even more connected.

Michelle Falkoff created a likable and thoughtful and interesting character in Sam to tell her story through. He was shy and awkward, like Hayden, but he was also much stronger than his friend, making for a compelling narrative. She wrote a story with a number of important messages, quietly delivered, that will keep readers thinking long after the story’s end. Ideas about forgiveness, and blame, and vengeance, and acceptance.

PLAYLIST FOR THE DEAD is a poignant and engaging and relatable story and one that is a must for readers who enjoy incredibly touching, coming-of-age stories and those who know just what it’s like to be in Sam’s shoes.

an important read for both teen boys and girls

Sam's best and only friend left behind a playlist after committing suicide, a death for which he feels responsible. Maybe, just maybe that list of music holds clues to the reason why Hayden overdosed. Sam's sure their argument was the reason, as well as bullying from Hayden's own brother. But then he meets Astrid and her friends, starts coming out if his shell, and learns things about his buddy he never knew. Is finding new friends, and maybe even a girlfriend disloyal to Hayden?

I had a hard time getting into PLAYLIST FOR THE DEAD, probably because I'm neither a video game nor music buff, Sam's two biggest interests. Once he started interacting with Astrid, her friends, his sister and her boyfriend, Sam became a much more interesting character and I embraced the story, but it was a slow start. The more I read, the more I liked Sam and I appreciated his strong moral compass. His sense of right and wrong helped him realize the strength he didn't realize he had, and he did grow as a character. Michelle Falkoff did a good job creating multidimensional characters, even the characters who seemed black and white had internal motivations of self preservation Sam hadn't originally understood. In the end, I liked and respected him. Falkoff captured the essence of a high school boy, a misfit who fit better than he realized.

PLAYLIST FOR THE DEAD is a very good book that will appeal to both boys and girls covering important social and mental health topics.

great realistic fiction novel from this debut author

“Apparently I wasn’t the only one who was finding people surprising these days. It made me wonder whether everyone had these secret lives, these aspects of themselves that didn’t match who they seemed to be.”

Where to begin with this? For starters, don’t worry about the music. I did listen to some of the songs but it’s really not necessary to follow the story. The music has more to do with Sam and Hayden’s relationship than the actual storyline. The songs on the playlist are meant to help Sam understand why Hayden committed suicide, but after listening to it several times the songs only confuse him.

During the story Sam finds that Hayden had other friends he didn’t know about and secrets he was keeping even from his best friend. The bullying everyone was aware of, but slowly though-out the book Sam is introduced to new characters and new perspectives of the fate filled night at the party.

What I really loved about this book is that it’s psychologically light, but layered with the emotions those that are left behind face: guilt, blame, anger, sadness, loneliness, hopelessness. It could be possible that everyone and no one is to blame for Hayden’s death. The narrative by Sam also made me able to really understand his feelings at any point in the story. Just how a passage was written would leave me just as frustrated or confused as Sam. Bravo.

What I didn’t like is, like in so many other YA novels, the complete lack of parent interaction. It seems like a go-to fix-it for YA novelists if you need parents out of the way, then the kid has a no-show dad and mother who is either a) a waitress at a 24/7 dinner or b) a nurse with odd hours.

Overall, Playlist for the Dead is a great realistic fiction novel from this debut author. I recommend it for anyone who likes psychological YA fiction that’s on the tragic side.

About the Author

Eric J. Simon is an associate professor in the Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and non-science majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for non-science majors. Dr. Simon is the lead author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology as well as coauthor of Campbell Concepts and Connections.

Well-organized and easy to understand introductory book

I purchased this book because it was a requirement for a class, and I was happy to have found it at a much cheaper price than what they were selling it for at the college bookstore.

This is a decent introduction to Biology, the information is well-organized into meaningful chapters. It doesn't go into a lot of depth, so I would recommend this book to anyone who either is required to purchase it or for someone who wants a basic overview of biological concepts. If you are already familiar with the basics, you might want to look into a more advanced book that goes into more detail about the areas you are most interested in.

For a textbook, I thought this was very well written and easy to understand.

A payoff not worthy of the buildup

In Part Three, all things are resolved as Mary finally takes her rightful place as the new Fetish Queen of the local kink community and we discover the source of the threats against her and the ones she has come to love. But Mary has to make several difficult choices and deal with immediate personal danger before she can reach her own personal Happily Ever After.

I suppose it's the nature of a concluding third part of a trilogy that setting up the plot payoffs and wrapping things up neatly is what needs to be provided above all, but I still found Part Three to be somewhat of a let-down. I'd guessed the source of the threats back in Part Two - it wasn't really much of a mystery - and when that person finally appeared, it was almost anticlimactic as the scene played itself out and the story moved along to its happy ending for all. It's not like I wanted Mary to actually be killed or harmed, but the buildup had been so effective that the payoff just couldn't live up to my expectations.

The Fetish Box is definitely nothing like anything else I've read this year. It didn't always work for me but I appreciate Nicole Camden's effort at writing something different than all the other serialized erotic stories available today. Although I can't help thinking that this story would have been better served without serialization, I'll always treasure the perfect jewel that was Part One.

Nice, but should have been one book.

I received my copy from Gallery, Threshold, Pocket Books through NetGalley and rated it 4- stars.

And so we arrive at the final episode of Mary's introduction to and continuation of her mother's kinky life. Again, since this book is not so much a third title in a trilogy but rather the third part of the same novel, we start exactly where the second story, "What Escapes"; ended with Max and Mary waiting for the police to arrive after people have broken into her house, forcing Mary to flee.

After this second attack, Mary is more determined than ever to attend the fetish party her shop is preparing for. She may be inexperienced when it comes to kink, but she is determined not to expose her new found friends to danger that is aimed at her personally. If anybody is going to put themselves at risk it should be her, and nobody else. And although her friends, and especially John who is starting to care for her more than he's willing to admit, worry about her safety they can't argue with the fact that it makes good business sense for her to introduce her mother's customers to the new owner of The Fetish Box.

Deciding what clothes to wear to the party gives John and Mary plenty and highly imaginative opportunities to explore new sexual games. And although the party does turn out to be as dangerous as everybody feared, all's well that ends well, especially since it allows Mary to discover exactly what she wants to do with her new life.

It is going to be impossible to share my thoughts on this book without repeating things I already said in my reviews for "Open All Night" and "What Escapes". Since this is in reality one story rather than a trilogy I'm not sure that it is possible to review this book as a single entity. In fact, if anyone were to read this book without having read the first two installments first, they would probably be completely lost as to what exactly is happening and why. So, my objections to Mike's Irish accent and to the speed with which Mary turns from a virgin into a sexy vixen still stand. At one point in this book our heroine is actually described as being "experienced" which is a bit of a stretch taking into account that it has been a mere few weeks since she was first introduced to the pleasures of sex.

As far as this book specifically is concerned I have two remarks to make. I found the resolution of the suspense part of the story a bit rushed. After all the build-up in the previous two installments it only took a few pages for the bad guy to come out of hiding, stage his attack and be caught. I also think I would have preferred it if there had been a twist with regard to the identity of Mary's opponent.

But, having said all that, I have to admit that I did enjoy the story as a whole. I liked the idea behind it, I liked the characters and enjoyed the interactions (both physical and verbal) between them. In fact, I think my rating would have been a bit higher if I had read this as one book, without interruptions rather than the way I was forced to read it now. I've got a feeling that there may well be a sequel to this story coming and if that is true I hope Nicole Camden will consider publishing it as one book rather than a serial. I do find myself curious as to how this story and these characters will develop further but I'm not sure I want to put myself through reading-interruptus once again.

The Fetish Box, Part Three

The Fetish Box: What Remains is the third installment of the Fetish Box novel. This section was okay. I would have liked the book better if it was sold as a whole novel and not broken into 3 parts. The problem with that is that you tend to lose interest in the characters when you have to wait to see what happens next andyou cannot get a true feel for the characters.
In this installment we find that Mary is transforming into her true authentic self (from virgin to fetish princess), which is amazing considering it has only been a few weeks. I like the complexity of the relationships between the main characters. They are all one big majorly dysfunctional family. This book is a little steamy, though I think the second installment was a little more so. Of course, we also find out who is trying to ruin the box, and it is no surprise. I hope that the author decides to continue the story with the arrival of Lillie, but not as a broken up novel. Breaking up the story is different from continuing it in another novel and if you must break it up I would suggest not waiting so long between installments.
