Pudd'nhead Wilson (1894) was Mark Twain's last serious work of fiction, and perhaps the only real novel that he ever produced. Written in a more sombre vein than his other Mississippi writings, the novel reveals the sinister forces that Mark Twain felt to be threatening the American dream. Great Book Marred By An Absolutely Terrible Introduction

If you buy this book, dive straight into the Twain works themselves and completely skip the introduction which contains such inane and unintelligible howlers as "Mark Twain has proved to be a one book author" and "every reader of Huckleberry Finn feels that the end of the novel is artistically mismanaged" and "Mark Twain's difficulties in writing the fully articulated novel consonant with the mood into which his mature experience had precipitated him are most evident in the construction of his eponymous hero."

I have no idea who R.D. Gooder is, but all I can say is that I am glad I did not have any literature professors like him. Stick with the unadulterated versions of Twain such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Cambridge World Classics) Special Kindle Enabled Features (Mark Twain Collection) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Cambridge World Classics Edition) Special Kindle Enabled Features (Mark Twain Collection)

As entertaining as any of Mark Twain's works. Fun for all ages. Great stroy and lessons in life as well as Twain's great gift for humor, subtle and obvious. Totally entertaining with enough drama to keep your interest. Great for entertainment, education or teaching.

It's too bad "Pudd'nhead" isn't more widely read as an example of Mark Twain, as it's probably one of his more interesting novels. 'Twas risky business for Twain to be writing about a little white boy who's mistaken for black and a little black boy who gets treated like a white kid, but that's part of what makes it so intriguing! Uninitiated readers will likely find the language a bit hard to get into in the beginning, but it becomes easier once you get into the groove of reading it. "Pudd'nhead" contains tons of thought-provoking themes on society, especially nature vs. nurture. For me, "Those Extraordinary Twins" is probably the funniest part of the story line. That farce alone is worth a read because it's so outrageous and unbelievable. Humor and storytelling like this is what has made people fall in love with Twain's writing.

Not recommended for most

I suspect a lot of the five star reviews are from friends of the author because frankly this book is principally an advertisement for his expensive seminars and/or DVD sets. It does not instruct the reader on how to survive the first 5 seconds period. What it does do beyond advertising is reinforce repeatedly that all the martial arts training in the world won't work without the right mindset or intention when applying it. This is absolutely correct, but this alone doesn't instruct the reader on how to survive the first 5 seconds of violence encounter.

I suspect the author's seminar's and DVDs that actually present the techniques needed to survive a violent encounter are valid, but you won't find them in this book. Fortunately I saw this while searching for another book in the library and read through it in an hour and I'm glad I didn't pay for it. I recommend going to the author's blog and reviewing it. You can get the same information for free and then you can decide if you want to attend the seminar or buy the DVDs.

Sounds Good, BUT...

This book is okay if you are a complete beginner in the world of RBSD (reality based self defense). I can imagine that it might contain some eye opening matrial for someone who has never considered the subject.

However, Tim Larkin presents basic, common sense ideas as if they are THE TRUTH TM, property of Tim Larkin and TFT. As another reviewer said, this book is essentially a 200 page advertisement to study his system (TFT - Target Focus Training).

The basic premise of this book, and Larkin's system, is that real self defense is based on injuring your attacker. This is a welcome insight, and one that is often overlooked in TMA (traditional martial arts). It bears repeating; the answer to a violent situation is to committ violence on your attacker, and violence is not pretty or clean - it is unpleaseant business. Alright, so this is a welcome piece of information, but does it require a $[...] book? How about a $500 DVD course? That is what Tim Larkin is trying to sell.

The real scam starts to become clear when one looks at the nuts and bolts of Larkin's material. So how do you cause an injury on an attacker? You strike vulnerable areas of his anatomy with lots of force. REALLY? You mean I should be trying to hit the eyes, troat, groin, ears and neck??? (Once again, if this IS news to you, you could probably benfit from this book - but there are scores of cheaper books you could benefit from just as much.)

Next, Tim Larkin teaches you to strike by stepping your body weight into a shot... as if this too were HIS discovery. Yes, you should strike with your body weight, and the best way to do this is to step into you strike (dropstep). Jack Dempsey said as much in Championship Fighting in the early 1900's - we didn't need to pay Tim Larkin to tell us this, did we?

As a martial artist, my biggest problem with Larkin's system is its coreographed approach to training. "You hit your attacker with this strike and he will react in this way, giving you this target." Yes, some physical responses are reflexive, but looking at a fight this way completely ignores the reality that fights are ballistic experiences; they happen, more often than not, at "ramming speed." This is another area where Larkin falls short. In his system he demands that you practice slowly because otherwise it is too dangerous. All I can say is that this is the oldest "carney trick" out there in the world of martial arts. If something doesn't work at 100% speed agasint a committed attacker who is moving however he wants and doesn't know how he is "supposed" to react, it doesn't work. And if you have never practiced a technique at 100% speed, the chances of you being able to use it in a panic situation are exceedingly slim.

So, that's my critique. It went a bit beyond the scope of the book and talked about Tim Larkin's system as well. The reason I did this is because, as other's have said, this book is basically a promotional tool for Larkin's system.

If you are new to RBSD and looking for a good place to start I would recommend the following books:

Gavin DeBecker - The Gift of Fear
Geoff Thompson - Dead or Alive

And remember, you don't have to pay some "expert" a mint in order to learn his super secret system in order to learn how to defend yourself. There is no "TRUTH, TM."

Philosophy - no How To

I was disappointed that the book did not live up to the title "How to SURVIVE" the Most Critical 5 Seconds of Your Life. To me it was just a long internet type teaser to purchase more products (courses and DVDs) Very little actual practical application was in the book. It definitely was not what I expected. I expected a book detailing methods to use to Survive the most critical five seconds of my life. I would not recommend it if you are looking for practical ways to defend yourself. If you are looking for an overview on the psychology of violence and the ways different social elements view and use it-this book is for you.

Some really spoke to my heart and others were good reminders of why we do what we do. Author of the Owl Series Bob Forward has at various times been a professional writer, artist, director, producer, and pyrotechnician. Sometimes all of them at once. Much of his work has been in Children’s Television, where he quickly established a reputation for creative and entertaining mayhem. He has written novels, scripts, and comic books, story-edited, directed and produced on a number of animated series, and runs a pyrotechnic special effects business on the side. He greatly enjoys creating and developing intriguing new characters and concepts, developing them into dynamic and compelling relationships, and then blowing them up. He tends to have noisy dreams.

Great Character

Once again, Brash Books has given new life to a book, two actually, with which I was entirely unfamiliar. Thank goodness.

Alexander L'Hiboux is a most unusual man. He lives off the grid. No home. No car. Not even a driver's license. He's for hire if you can afford him. He goes after people the law can't touch. Tough, uncompromising, once he gets on your tail, it can only end one way. Someone dies.

He's known only as The Owl, a man with a deadly reputation, one he works hard to maintain.

The nickname comes from one thing: L'Hiboux suffers from insomnalence. He never sleeps. When he gets tired, he sits and rests. When he's refreshed, he moves on.

Though he has an office, he never visits, speaking by phone to Danielle Santerre by phone, using a series of coded phrases to establish safety. He's only seen Danny in person a few times in four years.

He's hired by a man whose twenty year old daughter, a beauty destined for modeling, had had a blow torch taken to her face and hands. Father wanted them dead.

The Owl takes the job, even though someone is trying to kill him at the same time.

Apparently the Owl's reputation needs a bit more toughening.

Can't wait for the second Owl novel.

"The Owl" is a fine book, if you're a mystery/thriller lover.
For SF lovers, note that Robert D. Forward is not the same as Robert L. Forward, the science fiction writer.

An antihero to root for!

There is no shortage of "retro" novels, especially in the crime/noir field. Some of these work very well. But there is nothing like discovering a novel that is actually of the time period, not just apeing it . Such is the case with The Owl, resurrected by Brash Books and delivered to new readers straight from 1984.

This is the era where "men's adventure" books reigned, and The Owl has the action and violence to hold its own with any of them. Mix this with some vaguely otherworldly characters and dark humor and The Owl stands above them all.

Imagine Batman as a hired killer and you have the start of who The Owl is. He never sleeps. He kills without remorse. He tortures his victims to enhance his reputation. But he is also hiding from himself and his horrific past.

The action is top notch and the characters are vivid and interesting. Fans of pulp heroes of any generation should jump on this one if they missed it the first time. 5 stars!
