Another Quickie Romance Read in the Everything to Me Serial
By Melissa72
This is the second book in the Everything to me serial, the first book left us on an epic cliffhanger and this book pretty much picks up where the first one left off. We were introduced to Dana an Peter's forbidden love story in book one unless you read the prequel, Saving myself For You which shows Dana and Peter in high school, it is a crossover novel from another series, which I have not yet read, but reading these two parts of this serial has made me want to go back and check them out. I have to admit that I enjoyed the first installment a bit more than this one, but I did still enjoy this read. I am looking forward to reading then next installment as this book really feels like a set up for the next in the series. By the way it also ends in a cliffhanger ;) I was generously provided a complimentary copy of this book for an honest review.

I LIKED THE BOOKS ALTHOUGH I THINK THAT LEAVING YOU WITH A CLIFFHANGER TO MAKE YOU PURCHASE ANOTHER BOOK WAS NOT VERY PROFESSIONAL, I THINK THE STORY OF DANA AND PETER SHOULD HAVE BEEN WRAPPED UP IN A SINGLE VOLUME. NOW THAT I HAVE PURCHASED 4 BOOKS ,I AM NOW BORED WITH THE STORY AND WONDER JUST HOW MUCH LONGER THE AUTHOR CAN DRAG IT OUT ONLY TO MAKE YOU BUY MORE BOOKS TO SEE WHAT THE FINISH WILL FINALLY BE . AFTER READING THOUSANDS OF BOOKS I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS KIND OF PRACTICE BEING USED. I HAVE RED NUMEROUS SERIES THAT INVOLVED NUMEROUS CHARACTERS BUT NEVER SEEN ONE TO FOCUS ON JUST TWO CHARACTERS FOR 3 OR MORE VOLUMES !!!!

I'm really torn because I loved Twelve Days and the prequel to Everythinng to Me
By BMJMom
I'm really torn because I loved Twelve Days and the prequel to Everythinng to Me. However, I'm not liking the serial idea of installments. I don't like the repetition and the feeling of this "is the song that never ends". Eventually, Peter and Dana's story needs to end...either they get together or they don't, but it frustrating to have two chapters of backstory every ten-fifteen chapters.
On the plus side, Teresa Hill is a great author and I have not been able to put the books down. Just finish their story and move onto another character!

This by far is a "must have" for your book collection!
By Skye Stevens
This book was very empowering and will touch and ignite a fire in all who read these inspiring letters from several women, our sisters.
I cried good tears as I read a couple of the letters. The life changing journeys of each sister were all unique and breathed life into how we all must walk by faith and erase our doubts. This is one of the best inspiring books I've read from women who are like myself when I look in the mirror. I plan to purchase more and give to other women of all ages.
Sincerely, Ms. La Toya White

The stories can also be great case studies for teachers
By Amazon Customer
I purchased 4 of these to give to both ESL teachers and young women. The women featured in this book share their journeys of achievement with struggle in a way that captures and motivates. The stories can also be great case studies for teachers, as some of them discuss their global studies and immigration. Definitely get this book!

Art of Translating Prose, by Burton Raffel

There has been very little linguistically sound discussion of the differences between poetry and prose, and virtually no discussion of any sort of the practical consequences of those differences for the translation of prose. The Art of Translating Prose presents for both the specialist and nonspecialist the core strategies employed by the author in translating a variety of important prose texts, and in the process delineates a coherent program or theory that can inform each act of translation. Burton Raffel considers and effectively illustrates the fundamental features of prose, those features that most clearly and idiomatically define an author's style. He addresses those features that must be attended closely and imaginatively as one moves them from the original-language work. Raffel's insistence on concentrating on the artistic viability of the translation continues themes he explored in other books, most notably The Forked Tongue and The Art of Translating Poetry. Raffel finds the most important determinant--for prose, though not for poetry--to be syntax, which he argues must be tracked if the translation is to reflect the original author's style in a meaningful way. Raffel ties together theory and practice to establish sound standards for the evaluation of prose translations, and he provides examples in considerations of versions of such books as Madame Bovary, Germinal, and Death in Venice.

Review
Burton Raffel is arguably the greatest living translator of works of verbal art into English, and his authority in the field derives not only from the volume to which this book is intended to serve as companion (The Art of Translating Poetry) but also from his epoch-making series of actual translations, from medieval English, Indonesian, Latin, French, German, Spanish, Greek, and other tongues. This is an extraordinarily important contribution to the field. --John Miles Foley, University of Missouri

About the Author
Burton Raffel is Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Southwestern Louisiana and author of many books, including Artists All (Penn State, 1991) and The Art of Translating Poetry (Penn State, 1988). He is the translator of Rabelais's Gargantua and Pantagruel (Norton, 1990), winner of the 1991 French-American Foundation Translation Prize; Balzac's Pere Goriot (Norton, 1994), and a forthcoming new version of Cervantes's Don Quijote..

A Few Words
By Tony Marquise Jr.
Burton Raffel is one of the best translatersof literature living. His translation of Beowulf is the benchmark I compare other translations to. The Art of Translating Prose is an account by Mr. Raffel of the dificulties he encountered in translating various works. However, I found this book boring and not very informative. It is OK, but it should have been better.

He writes, “I am an ambitious traveler, eager to learn and, through the texts, to share much of what I discover with students, many of whom know little about the rest of the world. For me, traveling and writing are all dimensions of teaching. First, and foremost, I am a teacher—a passion for teaching animates everything I do.”

At Kenyon, Macionis teaches a number of courses, but his favorite class is Introduction to Sociology, which he offers every semester. He enjoys extensive contact with students and invites everyone enrolled in each of his classes to enjoy a home-cooked meal.

The Macionis family—John, Amy, and children McLean and Whitney—live on a farm in rural Ohio. In his free time, Macionis enjoys tennis, swimming, hiking, and playing oldies rock-and-roll (he recently released his first CD). Macionis is as an environmental activist in the Lake George region of New York’s Adirondack Mountains, working with a number of organizations, including the Lake George Land Conservancy, where he serves as president of the board of trustees.

Nijole V. Benokraitis, professor of sociology at the University of Baltimore, has taught the marriage and family course for almost 25 years. It’s her favorite class, but her courses in racial and ethnic relations and gender roles run a close second. Professor Benokraitis received a B.A. in Sociology and English from Emmanuel College, an M.A. in sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana, and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin.

She is a strong proponent of applied sociology and requires her students to enhance their study through interviews, direct observation, and other hands-on learning methods. She also enlists her students in community service activities such as tutoring and mentoring inner-city high school students, writing to government officials and other decision makers about specific social problems, and volunteering research services to nonprofit organizations.

Professor Benokraitis, who immigrated to the United States from Lithuania with her family when she was 6 years old, is bilingual and bi-cultural and is very empathetic of students who try to balance several cultural worlds. She has authored, co-authored, edited, or co-edited eight books, including Contemporary Ethnic Families in the United States: Characteristics, Variations, and Dynamics; Feuds about Families: Conservative, Centrist, Liberal, and Feminist Perspectives; Modern Sexism: Blatant, Subtle, and Covert Discrimination; and Seeing Ourselves: Classic, Contemporary, and Cross-Cultural Readings in Sociology.

Dr. Benokraitis has published numerous articles and book chapters on such topics as institutional racism, discrimination against women in government and higher education, fathers in two-earner families, displaced homemakers, and family policy. She has served as both chair and graduate program director of the University of Baltimore’s Department of Sociology and has chaired numerous university committees.

She has received grants and fellowships from many institutions, including the National Institute of Mental Health, the Ford Foundation, the American Educational Research Association, the Administration on Aging, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. She has for some time served as a consultant in the areas of sex and race discrimination to women’s commissions, business groups, colleges and universities, and federal government programs. She has also made several appearances on radio and television on gender communication differences and single-sex educational institutions. She currently serves on the editorial board of Women & Criminal Justice and reviews manuscripts for several academic journals.

Professor Benokraitis lives in Maryland with her husband, Dr. Vitalius Benokraitis, associate chair and director of graduate studies in computer science, Loyola College in Maryland. They have two adult children, Gema and Andrius.

Great Collection of Essays
By Lisa Shea
The most important thing to know about "Seeing Ourselves" by John J. Macionis and Nijole V. Benokraitis is that it is NOT a sociology textbook. Instead, it is a collection of essays that talk about a variety of topics. This doesn't help you "learn sociology" directly. Instead, it lets you read about a variety of situations, absorb them, and expand your knowledge about how things work in different parts of life.

Some are classics that everyone should have read at least once by now. you get Karl Marx and his "Manifesto of the Communist party". Then you get "McJobs: McDonaldization and the Workplace," "The Amish: A Small Society," "India's Sacred Cow," and "Are Asian Americans Becoming 'White'?" The essays cover a wide range of topics and help you think more about how different groups integrate into our global world.

These aren't questions with easy answers. From "The English-Only Debate" to "Female Genital Mutilation" there are people who will argue strongly on both sides. The idea here is to look into these issues and examine how they help us learn more about ourselves and the world we live in.

I found the essays to range a broad area of topics, and the book layout makes them easy to read. There are questions and notes at the end of each one. The questions are often very simplistic, but I imagine the book was meant to be an introduction for some students to very complex topics they'd never thought about before, so that is perhaps to be expected.

Well recommended.

Best text book ever! it has short segments of articles that are all pretty diverse and interesting. I liked it and i did use it a lot more than other text books because it was simple and not so long and boring

best book ever, I got it despite it not being mandatory in the class and I don't regret it. it gives so much insight that I have to stop after every reading and ponder on what I just read before going to the next chapter or article!! AMAZING
