Worthy of your time and consideration

This book does say that there is a system. It says that the system exists to regulate the rules and realities around us. It argues that instead of wasting time by fighting the establishment through countercultural behaviour, we should make the effort to reform and improve the structures that exist.
It goes on to further show how counterculture behaviour cannot only arrest development, but that its antisocial ideas and actions can harm us. Instead of behaving like adolescents, pointing fingers at the corporations that only sell us what we demand, we should be building a better society through real political process. This distinguishes thoughts and actions between dissent and deviance.
Perhaps you're like me, having already read "No Logo" & "Fast Food Nation". You were a punk in high school and are still seeking ways to "smash the system". Instead of trying to destroy 2000 years of culture, as Atari Teenage Riot would have us do, we should follow the conclusions that the authors reach. This book actually offers sound advice, rather than simply complain. Their ideas are practical and realistic.
Anyone interested in evolutionary psychology will feel at home with terms like "competitive consumption". The authors recognize that our quest for status affects those around us. What they object to is when your aspirations begin to harm society, when it is threatened by zero-sum games. Your attempts at distinguishing yourself from the masses could not only be pointless, but damaging. See their sections on the prisoner's dilemma, where they expand on that borrowed concept.
The authors rarely self-identify during the book, and I found this single voice to facilitate the reading experience. It was a wise decision. Overall, the writing is excellent, especially considering the critical nature of the topic. They also include the word "smacktard", which should be added to your everyday conversation.

Defending social justice from counterproductive radicalism

The Rebel Sell is the most thought-provoking and enjoyable critique of contemporary social and political myths that I have read in a long while. It is carefully argued and extremely engaging. It's a ruthless critique of many icons of contemporary thought, from Klein to Foucault, from Marx to Freud as well as a fascinating interpretation of North-American culture, from American Beauty to Kurt Cobain, from alternative culture to environmentalists. And this is the exact reason why those involved social critique and political activism should read this.
The central argument of the Rebel Sell is simple: since the 50s and 60s, the problem with left-wing politics is that it misdiagnoses the source of problems in society. While the critique of mass society identifies the source of problems in the inhuman and deeply repressive nature of "the system", Heath and Potter argue that 1) there is no such thing as the system and 2) most problems in our society are "collective action problems". The book is excellent at demonstrating the deeply individualistic and entrepreneurial nature of counter-culture and at showing how it feeds, and not rejects, the 'system'.
I was personally fascinated by the role of 'collective action problems' and the left's failure to address them. For instance, the authors argue that the source of most violence in society is rational. Following Freud, the left has ignored this fact, and focused on emotions and instincts. Similarly, the authors argue that consumerism is very much a product of defensive competition in the struggle to maintain status in society. Hence, SUVs, gun ownership, tuition fees, etc. are 'collective action problems', the solution to which does not rest in individual choices, but rather in collective decision-making.
There is a lot more in the book than just this. The authors in fact do an impressively good job at moving from philosophical arguments to actual examples. The sections on the social construction of taste, the importance of cool as a positional good and the discussion of alternative lifestyle are fascinating. In addition, the book has a great index and a very accurate bibliography.
For anyone that is genuinely interested in the social problems of contemporary society, this book is a must-read. It is not a manifesto for political action: in fact, it's most successful achievement is the accurate critique of the most prominent movements and ideas of our time. It is fascinating (and deeply troubling) to see how hypocritical and misguided political movements have been recently. A focus re-shift is necessary, and here's where to start.

good idea bad execution

don't get me wrong. the rebel sell has some great ideas in it, ideas about how we each reinforce the social system even at the same time we denounce it. ie. you can't refer to the masses unless you include yourself as well. The Rebel Sell is a good critique of the modern counter-cultural idea. But unfortuantely the book's concept is not well formed and readers may have a tough time trying to tie it all together.
The Rebel Sell suffers from terrible writing, endless pointless examples that had me dreading turning the next page, hoping in vain that I would find a stunning conclusion, and not just another dismissive tirade. let me give you an example of my biggest annoyance. One of the first chapters takes us through Freud's concepts on the mind and how they still influence our thinking and hence our cultural perspective today. It's a wonderful chapter that had me nodding my head, intriuged, until the chapter abruptly ends with 'but Freud was proven wrong and discredited, so there.' umm, what? care to elaborate? the authors make a lot of these statements. I think the authors mistook a plethora of examples for concrete arguments. the chapters themselves do not vary alot, and i found you could pick up any page, read a few paragraphs, find another page at random, and feel like you didn't miss a thing.
Also, the authors consistently come off as incredibly condescending, and I got the ironic impression that they were trying to start a counter-counterculture movement, or I'm so uber-punk that i've come full circle and wear a suit and work at Halliburton. Actually that sums up the book well.
but if you can get through the book and distill the concepts, it may change the way you look at all our various cultures, counter-cultures and subcultures.

A Great Pocket Guide to Starting and Learning About MMA

MMA is more than just mixed martial arts fighting, it's much more. To understand where this type of fighting originates we begin in the roman times. During the roman era this olympic style fighting was developed by the romans and then the greeks which added to the styles of fighting. These fighting styles were meant to teach quick striking moves among other moves.

Essentially Next you want to really understand why you want to join MMA and what is your purpose. When you define this purpose you will be more than focused to stick with your goal. Remember to truly understand this otherwise you might give up before long. Then you can start looking for a gym and a coach. You can find more in the book!

The reason I enjoyed this book is because I always have been interested with the way mixed martial artists conduct themselves. The training, fighting, conditioning, etc. It's all really impressive and so I was curious about it. If you are ever interested in defending yourself or wanting to fight competitively, this book is a great self-starter to get you on the path to your desired goal.

The perfect guide for anyone that wants to get into MMA

As a recent convert to MMA from wrestling I wanted to delve into the practice without making any initial novice mistakes. After purchasing and reading this book, I was able to achieve the insight necessary to not only find the right trainer, but also choose the area of expertise that I was looking for. From formatting a proper training plan and attending your first class to valid philosophical advice, this guide was the perfect primer for me. Also, the writing is to the point and instructive without discussing unnecessary things. I enjoyed that because the author makes sure to cover all the points necessary without wasting the reader’s time with extras that are unnecessary.

If anyone else is looking for a great guide on beginning MMA, I can personally attest that this is a stellar guide. Just like me I’m sure you’ll find its contents indispensable.

Amazing Rescource For A Beginner! Highly Reccommended!

I love the discipline of MMA. The guys really inspire me with their work ethic and conditions. I assumed it would be really difficult to start MMA training - so but this book on a bit of a whim. This book proved that everything was much simpler than I thought. I took the book’s advice and began to follow the steps in the “where do I start?” section. I then went and found a gym which I was quite nervous about, but this book walked me through every step in baby steps. Overall an absolutely fantastic book that I cannot recommend highly enough for anyone who wants to get started with MMA.

Great stories

I really liked all four of the books that came with this set. They are all part of the same series. They are all high quality eroticas that are a lot of fun to read through. I really liked the idea of showing stuff from the perspective of other characters. The characters keep progressing and developing more and more through the books. Although the best part is definitely they sex scenes, they are really detailed.

If you want some high quality erotica for a really good price, this collection is a good choice.

Just finished reading the series and without a doubt is my favourite so far of all I have read (and I have loved allof her books so far) I really like how it shows it from Ethan's point of view also, so many books only show the female characters side of thinking and like most women, I like to know what goes on inside a man's head also, LOL! Her writing keeps getting better and better and it was great to start with. I would really love to see a full length novel also :)

At first I thought this was going to be another stupid erotic story, but I pushed through the first part and was happy that it actually got better. If you like menage, light BDSM and two sexy men then this is the book for you.

Admittedly Hailey annoyed me in the beginning but she is young. As the story went along I ignored her angst and irritating behaviour and just went with the storyline. It's a good quick read.

Many big things in a small package...

This ebook has made it to the top slot of my top three favorite reads; the author has done a masterful job of making some very profound and important ideas very easily understandable. Most of the books I have read lately are very wordy and require ample amounts of time just to read and digest, and unfortunately I do not have the time to stick to reading them to their conclusion in a timely fashion. This book on the other hand was one that I was able to read completely through in just a few hours, and it kept my attention the entire time. This book is the essence of lean meat: every page is loaded with top-shelf advice and methods, and there is no fatty filler or fluff at all.

The strategies put forth in this book are profound, but in my lifetime I never noticed most of them at all... the author does a great job of elucidating strategies for protecting your wealth in a direct and encouraging fashion. Additionally, many of the methods he describes are easily implemented into one's lifestyle, e.g. correctly defining the role of employees and employers: such relationships are conditional, and each side necessarily must benefit for the relationship to work properly. Apparently an easy concept, but when I examined these relationships in my own life, I was able to identify many instances where the relationship was unbalanced and less rewarding financially for myself. This is only one point, the author has a collection of similar, financially-oriented points. He wonderfully succeeds in organizing all of these into a system that can be put to work immediately to begin the turn around in one's financial circumstances. He is patently honest about the progress that can be expected and very encouraging in their use with multiple short accounts of their utility and success.

This book is not a lengthy textbook for financial wizards nor a tome for the professorial individuals among us; it is instead for the 99.99% of the rest of us that want useful information put forth in regular language that can be absorbed quickly. I love the fact that I was able to download and read the book on my laptop, and even more pleased that the knowledge I have thus gained has allowed me to take a thorough inventory of my financial decisions and overall life. My realization will be yours as well, as the author neatly ties together the parallel universes of one's health and happiness alongside financial stability and growth. All of this for so small an investment in precious time as well as hard-earned cash, and this is exactly what the doctor ordered for avoiding the many pitfalls we all experience in our financial dealings. I wholeheartedly recommend and urge everyone to read it; I have purchased copies for everyone in my immediate Family, and the only compunction I have is that the author didn't write the book sooner so I could have put his system to work sooner. Thank you Mr. Sarel for your excellent work and for opening my eyes to a comprehensive strategy that puts me back in the driver's seat of my financial well-being; a solid, no-nonsense plan that I could incorporate into my everyday lifestyle quickly... I am already beginning to see the changes in my life. Now everyone can learn how to properly order their lives and achieve financial stability and order on their own terms.

Sound and comprehensive

I'm not a great reader of English literature apart from Dickens. This book provided an excellent background for me for all the things I've missed and probably will never get around to reading. But at least I now know the scope of my ignorance, and that is no bad thing.

Good as an overview, but a little vague.

I ordered this item in preparation for the CLEP English Literature exam, hoping that it would give me a brief overview of chief movements and works. The book did cover most major works and authors of prose, drama, and poetry. It is not very long, and has helpful timelines of historic events, authors, and works. However, I disliked this book for two reasons:

1. This book is rather vague. The descriptions of the major movements of literature are fairly good, but the descriptions of authors and works are very subjective, derived mostly from the author's impressions of them rather than dwelling on the descriptions of them. They are not discussed in-depth, and often key facts about the authors or works have been left out completely.

2. This book is rather hard to read. I have good reading comprehension skills, but I often had a difficult time following the author's chain of thought (and sometimes I couldn't follow it at all). The wording could be much plainer and ideas could be linked together much more effectively.

In summary, I gave this book two stars because I felt that it deserved it for having touched upon all major movements and authors. However, this book is not one I would recommend for gaining an understanding of English literature.

Multiple shapes, patterns, and arrangements, overlapping and colliding, generate complex and unpredictable social landscapes that challenge and unsettle conventional analytic models in literary and cultural studies.

Borrowing the concept of "affordances" from design theory, this book investigates the specific ways that four major forms--wholes, rhythms, hierarchies, and networks--have structured culture, politics, and scholarly knowledge across periods, and it proposes exciting new ways of linking formalism to historicism and literature to politics. Levine rereads both formalist and antiformalist theorists, including Cleanth Brooks, Michel Foucault, Jacques Ranci�re, Mary Poovey, and Judith Butler, and she offers engaging accounts of a wide range of objects, from medieval convents and modern theme parks to Sophocles's Antigone and the television series The Wire.

The result is a radically new way of thinking about form for the next generation and essential reading for scholars and students across the humanities who must wrestle with the problem of form and context.
